All new tarmac now smooth
No whinstone Workman said “that is a waste of time”
They are adding the anti-skid
They have planted way more bollards than they uprooted

The drivers are being LET through or turned back

I saw an SUV turned back which was pleasing
A cinquecento allowed through

The road is still closed but totally passable from about now until Monday 8 am when the crew return te repair SOME POTHOLES THE SIZE OF RAVINES

Thanks @fimm

I was thinking to do this tomorrow, given that my achilles seems a bit better. But the forecast is very windy so I'll probably go to work instead. Still, a good route for off season

Just to add; I do my "long commute" along the Lang Whang as far as the Kirknewton turnoff - I'm probably on that section about 7:30 - 7:45am and 6:30 - 6:45pm - I find it OK. The usual odd idiot but the only way to avoid those is to not use the road...

@greenroofer, same shop looked open last saturday and one Tuesday in September

So maybe only opens intermittently?

Broughton Village Store opened June 22nd 2019 *after closing abruptly in 2018)

Community owned.

Rural businesses very fragile

Yes half way for the broughton down and back but no parking for non cyclists Apparently VAT was a factor but has had three owners in five years?

Noticed this morning the kaimend cut through or carnwathbypass if going to Peebles etc closed tomorrow for week for resurfacing of what was always ok asphalt. You wont take that if going to apple pie

Had superb espresso and rhubarb pie this morning total cost £2.20

Came back followed by weather front so was wet dry wet dry etc

Wind SE which surprised and slowed me

Ok first avoid 21st to 27th of Oct as the stretch from west Calder turn all the way to CarnwATH WILL BE CLOSED. POSSIBILITY of bikes skipping through. But not guaranteed.

Not too much traffic heading west even at rush hour. Especially after the Kirknewton turn.

You can avoid the A70 by going through the top of Colinton and on past JK Rowling’s stable. There is then a short section of muddy path then on the road at blinkbonnie which then comes out at kirkbrae in Currie. Little bit of a footer but enjoyable if pootling, not great on road bike.

But if you mean going up to Bonaly then over by pass and round the back it starts well up to the reservoir and is proper road all the way round the reservoirs until you hit a farm road that is not great even on a hybrid. Goes on a fair bit then comes out at the farm and Mount Parnassus where James Thomson the weaver poet used to live. Now a picture framer? I do not see this as road bike suitable.

There is a water mains replacement project at balerno (a different one from the big pipeline from fairmilehead to thriepmuir) this means some delay on the road but not much.

I am guessing you are thinking the old ring road but i fear your best option is to go through Colinton. That main road is also due to close at some point soon which will cause traffic chaos for sure. In general heading west the traffic is lighter but various points of congestion

@Amir - can't vouch for what it's like Edinburgh-bound during commuting times as greenroofer does, but any time I've used it at my usual DIY times (8:30 start for 200), including recently on a DIY 200 from Gyle to New Cumnock and back it's been fine. Generally good sightlines and low volumes of traffic. Only bit I've ever had a problem with is the (800m or so) bendy bit just above Balerno, as it's too bendy for safe overtakes so you're somewhat reliant on others' common sense.

Thanks Greenroofer.

A supplementary question. Is Torduff Road Road bike able? I'm thinking of using it to bypass Colinton and Juniper Green

I rode north from Carnwath at about 0630 one day last summer, and my feeling was that the traffic was different, but not necessarily busier. It was mainly workies' vans heading to Edinburgh and the occasional four-axle tipper truck.

I've ridden it southbound on Friday evenings at 'rush hour' a couple of times this year and it's been fine. Busier than a Sunday morning, but not rammed or particularly unpleasant.

It's got good sightlines and is plenty wide, so as long as the traffic is one-way (which it is) then there's plenty of opportunity for overtaking you. You'll get the odd close pass, and the odd bit of idiocy, but that's par for the course whatever day you ride.

What's the Lang Whang like in terms of traffic on weekdays? I'm thinking of a midweek diy Audax as work, plus weather plus injury are making weekends difficult this month.

Also is this road gritted early in winter?

Next query I can Google. When does the apple place open?

Ta much
