Weather looking wet and warmer. Good stuff, hopefully wash all the snow away and the grit and general filth off the roads. Fingers crossed for next weekend.

The Whang was a more cruel mother this morning. Head wind of ~14mph, ice, farmers' muck, farmers' fires, snow flurries, hit by a stone chucked up by a speeding lorry. Approx 11.5 mph out to the ruined house at the S Lanarkshire sign. Tried a buff I was given last xmas that my son appropriated [he likes to wear it as a balaclava without eye holes and then puts a pair of mirrored sunglasses on to complete the Zapatista look]. Worked against the windchill for a little while but became very damp. I didn't bother pulling it back up after I turned. But what a turn. Made me feel good just to be alive. Slightly over then 30 mins to get home [22mph ish] Big Cog Candy mountain nearly all the way [cf. granny-ing most of way out]. Superb views of snowy pentlands, and ochils and not snowy Arthur's Seat. The sun is out now it would have been better to wait. Cycling in to the wind worked up a lather that high wicking techno fabrics cannot deal with. Off to take the hair dryer to the bike.

just very narrowly avoided being the victim of a snow-avalanche falling outside the doorway to Marchmont Crescent co-op. It may have been the door banging behind me as I left that set it off...

Made it to North Berwick and back - out along through Portobello > Aberlady > Gullane, back through Drem > Prestonpans > Wallyford > Milton Road > Duddingston > Cameron Toll > Dalkeith Road.

Main roads are completely fine - a lot of surface water though that will cause dreadful ice if / when it freezes. Snow dissapeared betweeen Aberlady and Gullane. Side roads pretty treacherous, it's pretty well compacted slush where our four-wheeled friends have been. I turned back about 20m down Sciennes Road after deciding it was impassable. Ambulance trying to get out of Sick Kids was having a similar experience.

Wind assisted 22mph average out to NB was shattered when I had to turn round and face an icy and persistent westerley. A combination of that, my general lack of fitness, not having any companions to share the work at the front and my lack of jelly babies slowed me down to a 14mph grind for the 20 miles back into Edinburgh. Energy sapping stuff. Really glad I did it though, longest ride I've got in since November.

Icebreaker full length tights, L/S vest and S/S vest (midweight), protective fleece biblongs, bridgedale merino trekking socks, rubber overshoes, polaris fleece/windstopper jacket, ERC windstopper winter gilet, buff, baabaa merino cap, gore lobster winter gloves. Needed every single piece - stayed plenty warm in the core but still chilled below the surface. Merino layers did their job beautifully and there was a glisten of condensation on them when I took the jacket off, but was dry and warm where it contacts the skin.

Well I've decided that this dusting of snow isn't going to get in the way of my cycling plans for tomorrow, so I've cleaned, oiled and lubed up the old road bike in anticipation of there not being a big dump overnight... Fingers crossed I can get out early down into East Lothian before the cars turn it into unridable slush. Wonder if anyone else will be out?

@amir - White Rea - that is what the sign says - they are clearly not local. Have been there a while, are a bit grubby white now and of course feckin freezin. They were in their wee hut on my way out but outside (as had been fed) on my return. Smaller than an ostrich but similar. I think a small holding over by St Andrews has them too. They do not appear to be breeding yet, the same three been there about a year. I guess as with ostrich the eggs are big. Not as much meat as you would get from the ostrich but they do not need to run about as much. Alternatively, as with Highland Cows might be more of a novelty creature?

Was on the Whang this morning - mostly good cycling. 55 mins to the south lanarkshire sign out [remember from Balerno, it isn't far]. I always wonder about that wee house and sheltered behind it - wind was South Westerly. 35 mins back - had one doldrum moment where lost momentum [some cross winds perhaps] and one big lorry stuck behind me on hairpins into Balerno, but was a great wee spin. Completely frozen at sides of road but still enough surface available. Buzzard and v cold White Rea.

Had helly hanssen base-layer [the lo-viz one] and Gore bib-longs from TBC and the Protective Kashi Jacket - was not warm. was sweating but some wicking occurring maybe better than previouusly, given the soft shell texture, no idea if waterproof yet. The return of snow, lucky the hols have been OK for batteries to be recharged.

"As long as it's not too cold outside to get my bike washed this weekend I don't mind."

One thing I (re-) learned in recent weeks is that I don't mind the cold - don't think I was actually out below -10 - two pairs of socks and warm overtrousers a must.

Of course it made a real difference that there was very little wind most days.

BUT - cold/wet.

Dropped a tool on a pile of snow about to become slush. Picked it up with bare hand and the small amount of freezing point water was an unpleasant shock!
