@toomanybikes: Good suggestion about longer parking restrictions on Mayfield Road south of West Mains Road, I'll add that to the wiki.

We used to use that vet before we moved and generally, if not always, drove there. Don't recall ever having any problem parking in the car park.

The vets has its own car park which according to Google maps is only full 1/10th of the time, and I'm sure could be less full if vets had an incentive to sacrifice their parking for their customers.

That would be great! I've been thinking about this recently and had no idea community proposals existed. The Oswald Road filter in particular is desperately needed to civilise the walking route to Blackford Hill.

In addition, James Gillespie's Primary School are proposing a quiet route from the Blackford Ave/Charterhall Rd junction to the school/Bruntsfield Links. This could provide a useful alternative, although I do believe there should be a direct segregated (or filtered) route along Mayfield Rd / Causewayside as well, as davecykl suggests.

The Gillespie's proposals would be a reduced traffic, filtered route along Charterhall Rd (segregated), Oswald Rd, the Astley Ainsley site, and Whitehouse Loan. The railway crossing would be achieved using the existing bridge at Oswald Rd, but with through-motor-traffic filtered out.

An easy win would be to remove the parking along Mayfield Road past KB, switch the single yellows which stop at 9:30 (pre a lot of academic commute hours) to double yellows. It's only used by people accessing KB anyway so the university is the only stakeholder.

You need to use that bit of road to access the Southern parts of KB, so cycle infrastructure needs to beyond Esslemont road.

@gkgk: I absolutely agree that would also be useful (and hopefully an "obvious" thing for the council to do), but that is part of the Marchmont - Blackford - KB route, rather than this one. ;-)

I can't now remember whether that was the final proposed layout for that uphill stretch of Blackford Avenue or not, as it is (searches, checks...) now, shockingly, 5 years since the council proposed that route, and nothing has happened since then:

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=13536

(Honestly, our Councillors should be thoroughly ashamed at the pathetic rate of progress by their staff. It really is no use having grand plans if none of them actually come to fruition.)

I like the big bridge ideas but it'd be great in the shorter term if they could remove 10 or 15 car storage spaces from Blackford Ave, to allow segregated uphill road space by the allotments, and at the pinch points near the PO/Avenue shop.

I know that building bridges is expensive, but we have more funding nowadays, and if we are serious about making cycling easier and safer, then this is the sort of thing that we have to do.

The proposed Dalry to Roseburn cycleway involves even longer bridges, which gives more hope that this sort of proposal would be more achievable than even a few years ago.

In the Netherlands, they wouldn’t even blink about it (will search for that photo of a nursery school incorporating a cycle bridge on top of it, and then over a canal, when I’m back at a proper computer…)

"The obvious location for a ramped cycle bridge would be between Mayfield Court and (either) Relugas Gardens or the path access to nos 61-69 Relugas Road just to the west (assuming there is space there for suitable approach gradients)."

East Champanyie is another possible option on the South side. Finding a landing spot on the North side is harder.

Building bridges over railways is insanely expensive.

DRAFT proprosal for improvements to the existing cycle route corridor

The existing designated route between the UoE central campus and King's Buildings along Causewayside - Mayfield Road is often criticised for

* discontinuous cycle lanes
* that the cycle lanes are not protected from other traffic
* having to weave in and out as the cycle lanes pass around designated parking spaces
* poor road surface (especially the section between West Preston Street and Salisbury Place, which is also narrow)

Sustrans has Places for Everyone funds which I would have thought the University would be able to apply for to help upgrade this route.

A proper route masterplan would really need a proper (potential) user consultation and design process (publicity, web surveys, meetings/workshops, etc) but a couple of specific ideas which have been doing the rounds for a while (but which often nobody has the time to actually try to take forward properly) are:

1. A cycle bridge across the South Suburban Railway which would fill in the "missing link" between Lauder Road or Findhorn Place and Langton Road (which arrives at King's Buildings at an already signalised junction (but needs improvement)), providing a very quiet road alternative to Causewayside - Mayfield Road entirely.

The obvious location for a ramped cycle bridge would be between Mayfield Court and (either) Relugas Gardens or the path access to nos 61-69 Relugas Road just to the west (assuming there is space there for suitable approach gradients).

2. Selective restrictions of parts of Causewayside for private motor traffic (perhaps northbound only between Salisbury Place and West Preston St, and southbound only between Salisbury Place and Duncan St). This frees up road space for wider/better cycle lanes or segregated cycleways, and other streetscape improvements. By preventing use as a through route for cars, almost all traffic would be forced to reroute to more suitable streets such as the A701 (Minto St). Buses could continue to use the road in both directions by providing traffic lights at each end of the bus gate sections which would be triggered by approaching buses so that the appropriate one-way flow (separate from cycle traffic) would be possible (perhaps with a couple of wider "passing places" if needed?).

Someone has put up a neater and linkified version of the above draft proposal (which members of the UoE community can edit, if they ask for permissions), but bearing in mind that other people also use all or part of this route corridor, it might perhaps be handy if someone with enough spare time and tech skills could rustle up a wiki or similar somewhere that any registered user could edit?
