Followed a fat guy on an eMTB the other day. Had to warn him his back wheel was on the verge of collapse. I guess the motors do place materially different stresses on bike components.

This article would suggest it's a good thing. I think. My IGH engineering knowledge is about as good as my ability to knit (ie I can just about follow it, providing what you want is a single-colour scarf).

Given I've tied myself into mental knots trying to work this out, throwing open to the hive mind.

Shimano have a relatively new internal gear hub - clicky. It looks like their older 5-gear hub, possibly slightly updated, and certainly rebranded as "ebike specific".

Lowest gear appears to be direct drive, and then the rest of the range is 263%. Argument is that it's five more robust gears, capable of dealing with ebike torque much better. Plus you don't need the range of a more fragile hub if you've got a motor helping on the climbs.

I can't work out if this is snake oil, sensible, or something else. Is that range workable on a e-cargo bike in hilly areas? Will one break an ankle in the gear gaps?

Thoughts?
