Hmm. Overkill for my commute apart from those odd days of snow, but I suppose the benefit of a motor is that it doesn't really matter. And it would save buying new wheels!

45NRTH apparently do a 650 spiked commuter tyre that looks perfect, but can't see any outside North America

Ta much both.

It's not the BB you need to worry about, it's quite high. Rather the centre kickstand clearance.

26" wheels would be more logical: stronger, and only 25mm difference in diameter of the rim. Stick some 2.2" tyres (56mm) on and it'll be almost the same diameter as the 650B with 47mm tyres. 8mm lower isn't going to make much difference.

However Marathon Winters only come in maximum 26 x 2.0 AFAIK. Continental Spike Claw comes in 26 x 2.1. Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro comes in 26 x 2.1 and 26 x 2.35. This latter would give almost exactly the same overall diameter as your 650B x 47.

I think I've managed to use three different wheel measuring standards in one title there. Rather proud.

My local Evans is getting the last one of last year's Kona Ute electrified in for me to test. Excellent price, and just inside my employers CtW limit, so tax savings galore.

However, it uses 650b * 47mm width tyres. You can't get marathon spikes in that diameter.

One option (I think) would be to get a winter pair of wheels in a more common size.

Any obvious reason this wouldn't work? If going down to 26" I'd need to watch the BB clearance, and 622 might need quite a skinny tyre to fit. Disc brakes, so no worry there.

Anything I've not thought about?
