Even more developments/improvements at CycleStreets in recent days.

CS was even mentioned in the Westminster Parliament, where the Government defended its use of millions (literally) of pounds on the 'official' cycle journey planner while the 'cycling community' has produced a better one for (almost) nothing.

As part of that 'cycling community' you can make things even better by adding to/improving the underlying OpenStreetMap data.

This has just got MUCH easier

The new improved OSM editor has been embedded into CycleStreets to add to its 'usability'. Anyone can now 'play' with it - no changes are saved until you log-in/create a new account.

One thing that makes subtle changes even easier is the fact that the default satellite view is now Bing instead of Yahoo - so you can actually see streets/paths etc.

The Bing imagery is not as clear or recent as Google's, but more than good enough for checking if existing OSM data is accurate. Some of it has been based on maps rather than what's actually 'on the ground'.

More details -

http://www.cyclestreets.net/blog/2011/01/23/integrated-map-editor

"I got a bunch of weird errors though trying to pull up Edinburgh addresses."

If you use a post code the letters need to be caps and there needs to be + between both halves.

"This time it gave all three roughly the same, and through some quite tricky intersections"

I assume it does the same routes if you use 'pins' rather than post codes(?)

There may be a change in the way that CS is 'routing' or some detail of the underlying Open Street Map data has be changed.

Might be worth sending a problem report off the CS web site.

I got a bunch of weird errors though trying to pull up Edinburgh addresses.

When I did get it to work I punched in the route from home to nursery - it used to give three quite different rides including a gentle one through the meadows (which incidentally is the preferred taxi route too). This time it gave all three roughly the same, and through some quite tricky intersections.

And now can be more accurate than a post code -

From Twitter -

"
cyclestreets: Added experimental support for journey-to URLs with lat, long in, like: http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/to/52.204106,0.117061
"

Original Tweet: http://twitter.com/cyclestreets/status/24616095759466496

Various interface improvements including a bigger map.

Details - http://www.cyclestreets.net/blog/2011/01/08/design-and-usability-improvements

Also it's now possible to link to any Post Code as a destination to plan a ride to.

Useful for organisations, conferences etc.
