@unhurt , yes that is what i meant.

I also thought well served but your best friend’s father had an answer to that. Viz the lack of bus to St. John’s hospital, et cetera.

Balerno IS well-served by buses. The problem is the buses are poorly served by car-created congestion. And that Edinburgh needs some circular routes to go with the radial.

I think you may mean my best friend's brother may resemble his male parent?

@unhurt, yes I know. Your friends dad Asked me a question - Do you think Balerno is well served by buses? I said yes but this was the wrong answer. We then had a long discussion at which point on the paper of the survey it looked as if I had changed my mind. THe local councillor was querying your friend’s dad’s survey technique.

I had been directed by the other Village Trust people to discuss the transport consultation with your friend’s dad. Your friend might not appreciate this but he seems quite like his dad?

i've really enjoyed traffic-lite raeburn place, and in a mad mand world, would like to see it made one-way only--would then be rat-runnish only early mornings, if it were city-direction.

but it will be good to have the bus back. that's been noticeable. Didn't help that Lothian didn't bother to update the schedules on their app.

You can buy a loaf for 12 pounds in Morningside. The Covenanter. Does not quite feed five thousand but it is a belter. The bakery - ANdante has a stall at Balerno Farmers Market. I was standing in front of it last Saturday in pre-contemplative mode. At the time I was being interrogated for 30 mins by pocket dynamo organiser of Fairtrade Balerno. Mostly this was about a rash promise I made to Bert last year when he was 92. I appear to have said we would give him a tee shirt if he came back this year. Anyway due to the length of this interrogation in front of the stall I was asked by the Andante person if I was a stall holder at the market. I said yes in a manner of speaking as I operate the Fairtrade Smoothie Bike. (Apparently council want us wearing blue gloves this year). THis may have given me a discount as the Half Covenanter came in at 5 pounds odds. About a minute later a big wind came along and they started closing the market early and giving away unsold bread and pastries.

Finished the Half Covenanter yesterday - so five days.

On other Covenanter matters - anyone up for cycle and then walk to The Covenanters Grave? Might need to wait now until things dry out. The route is best when earth frozen. Starts at the west Calder turn B7008 of thr A70.

I noted a sign (just the one) yesterday on Ardmillan Terrace. "Work starts here 27th Jan for eight weeks"

Looking at the council's list, it's actually going to be shut for 10 weeks, along with various other road closures and lane restrictions. But, Gorgie, so no horrified articles in the Chipwrapper.

Monday morning is going to be *hilarious* and I shall enjoy the quiet on Harrison Road, just like when it was shut before Christmas.

"It was all Jo Mowat moaned about for the best part of a year."

No. Cllr Mowat's concerns were about the New Town proper being desecrated by déclassé riff-raff rat running motorists decanted via the Albany Street diversion. I'm sure she was equally appalled at the noxious vehicle exhaust gases assaulting Abbeyhill residents' nostrils, lungs and eyes due to the year long gyratory. However she either kept her counsel due to Abbeyhill being outwith her ward, or because any concerns she may have had were purely Platonic.

Reminds me of when there were the resurfacing works on St John's Road. It was marvellous. My customers still cycled or parked up the hill and walked down. I tried to express to other traders how much nicer it was. They were convinced they were losing trade, which they probably were in the short term, but long term the benefits are immense and well-documented.

Almost zero traffic on Raeburn Place and people are beginning to get the idea that they can walk on the road. Interesting that while businesses have expressed some concern over possible loss of trade, there's been none of the furious opposition there would be if it were something the council could be blamed for, like tram works or (god forbid) construction of a cycle lane.

Could only have bettered the route if I came out the lane at Bellvue Kirk

I do not recall such a stooshie being reported in the EEN when Abbeyhill residents had a year long gyratory system inflicted upon them in order to facilitate the golden turd. Possibly EEN cares little for the less well heeled inhabitants of Abbeyhill, but also the council astutely cordoned off nearby millionaire's row in anticipation of the ensuing TRAFFIC CHAOS AND MAYHEM, which potentially could have resulted in the rank and file hoi polloi ruining the Georgian elegance with their proletarian vehicles. Thereby staving off the prospect of Royal Terrace residents' outraged phone calls, missives and Brexitania Party councillors delugeing Her Majesty's finest.

It is both an 'arterial' route out of the New Town as you say, and forms part of an imaginary ring road avoiding Queen Street. Hence main road feel.

Would be great to start routinely closing it on Sundays for the market, or at least widening the pavements. Making it buses-only would be a shame as you'd lose the ability to use the road as an events space, but would certainly make things much friendlier and allow reallocation of some of the road space at least.

It's perceived as the principal route from the New Town to the West/Forth Road Bridge, which will make closing it challenging.

Not for residents of course, who would gain a pleasant high street (although I know a few Stockbridge residents who bristle at any hint of the Council reducing their "freedom" to drive wherever they see fit at whatever speed they see fit).

It would be interesting to know how much of the traffic is just passing through and ruining in the local environment while they do. I suspect a diversion via Ferry Road or Queensferry Road is quicker for the vast majority of people who drive on Raeburn Place, but they see their current route as shorter and therefore faster.

I agree that it ought to be shut but I'm not sure whether I'd count it as a 'rat run.' In my head that's a word reserved for residential streets people use to cut between main roads, not something which is currently numbered as the B900 and still a signed route to the Forth Road Bridge(!)
