I gave his Debatable Lands to my brother as he has just crossed that zone northwardly. Looking forward to getting a read of it.

Yes. I enjoyed his Discovery of France several years ago and bought The Debatable Land in hardback when it came out as it was of local interest for me. Very interesting and entertaining. I’ve no idea how much belief to put in his more speculative thoughts (the last quarter of The Debatable Land in particular), but it’s worth mulling over. And, yes, he transport cycles a fair bit, which is pretty unusual in that neck of the woods.

Hadn't heard of him and the first thought from the header was that he had died...

Thankfully not, and definitely he sounds worth a trip to Edinburgh to listen to.

Any other fans? thinking Kim should get him to do a reading at EdFoc. I'd love to hear him talk and invite him out for a beer (or a bike ride!).

He's written several well-received books about France from a base in Oxfordshire. It was mentioned in passing that he did all his research by bicycle.

A few years ago he moved to the border - literally a house on the border, although apparently in North Cumbria. And wrote a book about the western border region: the Debateable Land.

In this one he talks quite a lot about his bicycle, and getting round by bike and the local bus.

I'm still reading it (actually listening to it), but very much enjoying.
