"C) after work train to London and a cheap hotel."

With family, I'd say this is the best option. More enjoyable: evening in London, take it easy. Then sleeper service the next night. Otherwise your kids may hate you and trains for a long time... :-)

@chdot / @arellcat - never realised so much had been invested in moving direct trains north.

News tonight is that UKGov will have to make decision soon on HS2 as costs rise to over £106bn.

Cost so far is £7.5bn. Green Party in England want it scrapped - hard to feel comfortable about that but seems to be an increasing mood down there that such a huge project does not tie in with the aim to improve the 'ordinary persons' commute.
Talk of more trans Pennine, Northern Powerhouse priorities to reward voters for their conversion to the blue corner. Also heard demands for more roads!

@HankChief Appreciate it won't help you with the Edinburgh to London leg, but he (Seat61) is live-tweeting a London-Vienna trip today. Das Link.

Also, for reasonably priced accommodation near St Pancras, consider the YHA.

There's also a decent Premier Inn or Travelodge or something at Kings Cross (which is right next to St Pancras if you didn't know) - this according to my parents who have used it on the way to the Eurostar, I have not.

The 05.40 is billed as the Flying Scotsman and gets to London for 9.40. Have done it with work and it is actually a very relaxing way to start the (working) day as it only stops at Newcastle so none of the faff of people getting on/off and you can get some work done on it.

The interesting thing is the 1st class is usually pretty busy, but to get to it you have to walk past all the empty standard class carriages.

I'm just not sure that it is the ideal way to start the family holiday...

The 5.50 out of Edinburgh billed as getting to London before 10am but the 06.00 not until 11ish?? That still the case? Not much transfer at Kings X but as you say sort of relies on them not cancelling the 05.50??

Have been spending this evening trying to see how it would be possible to get the family to Austria by train in the Summer.

The new sleeper from Brussels to Innsbruch/Vienna is tempting, but is made rather more complicated by how to get to London for the 12.58 Eurostar to Brussels (the Sleeper leaves at 18.04 but the afternoon Eurostar gets in at 18.05).

Working back from needing to be comfortably in London for 12o'clock (45 min check in time), we either have the option of

A) very early train that morning & trust LNER
B) sleeper to London (but that would be 2 sleepers in a row and having done that to London & back it isn't pretty)
C) after work train to London and a cheap hotel.

The alternative is a to take the afternoon Eurostar and then get a variety of ICE trains to leapfrog the sleeper somewhere in Germany.

Coming back is okay-ish, you get to London at 4pm so can get a late train home.

[Yes I have consulted Seat61.com]

As we prepare to have options to travel limited by climate emergency and Brexit you sometimes look for good news.

This though is not the old idea of boarding a train in Edinburgh and arriving in Europe next morning (as promised for our tax contribution to bailing out Eurotunnel way back).
1.It's from London - not bad in itself of course although chances of getting bike down there reduced by @LNER
2. You get train to Cologne where you go overnight to Malmö via stop in Copenhagen then across Øresund.
Proposal by Swedish rail. West coast line Sweden/Norway currently being upgraded to double track all the way so rail times should become faster in Scandinavia to Oslo.
