A rare sighting of the Lesser Spotted Dundonian Cycle Lane. Not to be confused with the similarly scarce Up Dsupt Nipt Sbc Tae (Utterly pointless Dundonian shared use path to Nowhere in particular that Stops before connecting To anything else).

These two exotics can occasionally be seen hosting the extremely endangered species Brave Dundonian Cyclist. The latter is considered a hardy perennial, and the two seem to co-exist in a symbiotic, if not necessarily mutually beneficial relationship.

I've used Dundee a few times to get north. More trains and on Edin to Arbroath ones you don't need a booking.
Going out you leave station and can cycle across dual carriageway opposite V&A and out to the west. This is quite good beside Tay but progressively becomes more challenging as really just a pavement. Often see people coming in from Ninewells or using to run or cycle as sport.
Eventually you have to join the road to the infamous Swallow Roundabout. Here you cross the A90. Relatively easy as long as you're not intimidated by HGVs.
Once over you head up to Muirhead on quiet roads. Theses now have various housing devs so some traffic but preferable to uphill in city.
Reversing the route I often stay on roads as downhill and fast enough. Umpteen roundabouts and skirts Lochee.

When we did family rides using train with our compact tandem and a solo we did use a route that went through industrial estate and Ninewells and onto Camperdown park. Had a culvert cycle path under A90. Narrow with glass. Mrs LB was not impressed. For daughter it was just an adventure.

Used to think things would be better by now...

@daveycykl - Aberdeen pips Dundee in cycle unfriendliness. Dundee has a bit down by the silvery Tay?

OK, that's weird… I'm sure the street view imagery was older (and didn't show the cycle lane) when I looked earlier on, only the aerial photography, but now you can see it in all its glory(?).

Orcas too! They probably spent the entire decades cycling budget on that.

Got a bit distracted with some map exploration, but, wait, is that actually a cycle lane (and a contra-flow one, at that) in Dundee?

https://www.google.com/maps/@56.4622345,-2.9647437,111m/data=!3m1!1e3

(And it's blue, even?! «faints»)

[muses: Are there actually any other cycle lanes in Dundee at all (Tay Road Bridge very half-heartedly excluded), or is it possibly Scotland's most cycle-unfriendly city?]
