@bill if only I had looked at Strava I would have seen your burn shot did not swing up standing stanes

@FIMM those regs are clear, what I struggle with is the tiers. I tend to go from Tier 3 to Tier 4 so I guess on the whole the risk is more mine than the people to the west. I know a local cycling club who did a fab route the other day that was tier 3 only with perhaps tiny dip into tier 2. I hope to replicate this route next Sunday as is a brammer. Not stopping at all seems to be our GOOJFC Though I cannot pass the third largest hospital in medieval Scotland without stopping briefly.

Just for information - you may leave the City of Edinburgh while doing exercise (so long as your exercise starts and finishes at the same point) and you may also drive up to 5 miles from the City boundary to exercise. However if you are taking part in an "organised sporting activity" you must stay within the city limits.

DAMHIKT (at least not if you want to avoid a long tale of woe...)

On the other hand, these kind of restrictions do provide "fun" challenges - Mr fimm ran all the streets within a mile of our flat and covered about 20 miles IIRC.

@gembo To get to SQ we took roads west of Dundas Castle. We didn't go down to SQ but back to Kirkliston and then along Burnshot for Cramond/Silverknowes. Those cobble streets are indeed lovely but I really don't like cycling on them (the bike shakes like mad).

@bill after burn shot did you take standingstanes to Dalmeny? I like Dalmeny. Then is a left down to SQ and you get to cycle through the lovely wee cobble x

@Greenroofer this is the route we set out to do if you want to copy it and mock about with it. We didn't follow it to the dot, e.g. we didn't go down to SQ as we missed the turn. You could go almost to the other side of FRB and still be in CEC.

Surprisingly my legs are telling me today that they did some climbing. I suppose there was a lot more sharp climbs than you get on rural roads. The climbs often started from full stops (i.e. lights, right turn).

Everything just as @edinburgh87 said. I may add a couple of things from my perspective.

@edinburgh87 told me about his idea last weekend and I thought it was brilliant and asked if I could join.

It was great cycling with someone who knows the roads (80% of the roads were his commutes) and places where I don't go by bike. Lots new dots for me especially by bike.

My favourite discovery was Burnshot Rd from Kirkliston. We were there just as the sun was rising over the Pentlands. It was magical. Lots of cyclists in the opposite direction, so clearly a popular route.

@Greenroofer I was worried about that very issue that you mentioned but never felt I need to. It was a bit chilly so I didn't drink much (probably should more).

Here is Strava link if you want check were we went and didn't go.

Great effort @bill and @edinburgh87 - very good use of the city.

Has anyone listened to Mark Beaumont's Endurance Podcast - he is an acquired taste, but I think that the first episode (with Jenny Graham, Fiona Kolbinger and James Hayden) was great.

He's put together a book worth the same title, published by GCN.

May be worth showing to , for example, Mrs Greenroofer who could have a word with Santa

Not at all - I just took advantage of the lunch stop but I guess big supermarkets and similar would be suitable too. Not quite the same as the middle of the borders at 9pm but I dare say you’d be unlikely to get too stranded! Didn’t drink too much today too which doubtless helped.

So I am extremely tempted to steal your route with pride. It feels like a perfect Boxing Day activity. However I have one technical/practical question.

On long rides in the country, I normally take 'comfort breaks' at the side of the road (as seen in the video linked above). This has never been a problem, but is neither practical, nor desirable, on the route you guys followed today.

So, if it's not too impertinent a question, how did you remain 'comfortable' on an eight-hour ride within the city limits...

I guess it could be best described as a very long 'commute' bookended by a great sun-rise and set. The new "rules" (term used loosely - compliance appears optional judging from the traffic) piqued my interest last weekend as to whether it was possible to do a 200k within the CEC area. I plotted a route of about 200k. Didn't bother entering it as a DIY or anything to give the option of calling it a day earlier . Started at Gyle about 7:30, headed out West, skirting the WL border via Kirkliston and SQ then eastward to the EL border before a hairpin back toward the Jewel / Wisp. Following a coffee at the drive-through coffee shop near the Jewel we transgressed slightly into Midlothian via the Wisp (as an ML native I reserve the right :)). Then some back and forwards on the A7, A772 and A701 before heading West on Frogston Rd where Bill kindly laid on some croissants. Then a loop West to Balerno etc where @greenroofer caught us. Finished up looping round Ratho and Newbridge / A8 before I jumped ship passing home at the Gyle while Bill kept going to the ton mark by virtue of an extra loop around Balerno. I think we managed unintentionally to ride on every main road going to / from Edinburgh (A8, B9080, A90, A772, A701, A199, A1 (crossed), Lasswade Road, A7, A702, A70, A71) Definitely looking forward to getting back into the Borders / Fife / South Lanarkshire though...

SG guidance allows you to leave level 3 and 4 areas for:

local outdoor informal exercise such as walking, cycling, golf, or running (in groups of up to 6 people from no more than 2 households) that starts and finishes at the same place

"Covid-19 - Update 4 Nov 2020
The Audax UK Board has been closely monitoring the various COVID restrictions introduced and planned across the UK over the last few days and weeks.

The current position is as follows:-

England

<snip>

Scotland

Introduced a five-tier system on Monday the 2nd November. No local authorities are in Tier 4 as yet. AUK has submitted guidance to sportscotland and had that guidance approved. AUK organisers can continue to organise events that follow that guidance. There are however stricter limits for events in areas within Tiers 3 and 4 that would limit events to 6 people. Outdoor sport is generally permitted so permanent rides can continue with a limit of 2 riders per event route per day."

Last line is interesting given the contention of some that bikes shouldn't be ridden over <strike>county</strike> council lines (cue Dukes of Hazzard music in my head)

Regrettably, we have decided to postpone LEL2021 until 2022. Even though the world has made huge progress in combatting Covid-19, we are not confident that the world will recover by next year.
LEL2021 will now take place on 7 August 2022.
If you already have a guaranteed place because you have paid a deposit, we will hold this for you. However if you decide you no longer want to take part, then please email us at 2021@londonedinburghlondon.com before 31 December 2020 for a full refund of your deposit. From 1 January 2021 our usual rules will apply.
If you are looking for a guaranteed place because you are a member of Audax UK or Audax Ireland, you will need to keep your membership for an additional year.
If you are looking for a guaranteed place because of qualifying LRM events, then you will need to have completed a LRM-validated in four of the five years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
We will write to everyone over the next few days. In the meantime if you have any questions then please ask them here.
By the way, the fantastic photo is by Ivo Miesen and is from 2013 when the event featured a lot of rainbows.

@crowriver, where did you see that. I can't see anything on the LEL or Aukweb sites.

I see AUK have cancelled LEL 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.

Re-scheduled to 2022. Here's hoping things will be more under control by then...

@bill yes, watched the forecasts somewhat aghast but it became clear it was quite a small field for this second running so out of fairness to the organiser's efforts, I decided I would at least start and I could turn at Eskdalemuir or Langholm if necessary. If it had been windy as well, that would probably have tipped the balance but the winds didn't start until we were back in the Ettrick valley.

The guy in the shorts with the tiny cassette doing all the climbs en danseuse, now that's a mentalist :)

@Murun did you have any second thoughts before the ride? Just wondering what sort of mentalist you are!

Thanks for the kind words. @acsimpson while I knew how close to an imperial 200 I was, about 99% of my brain space was occupied with the need for (a) dry clothes and (b) hot food, so it wasn't a difficult decision.
