They had better not condemn my tent or I will condemn them in the most vociferous fashion..

They have a machine that tests waterproofing on flysheets and similar using a column of water or some other such dark magic.

A friend took her tent in to get a new groundsheet but the machine condemned it.

(Disclosure - a friend is a director of SMG's parent company, but I'd still thoroughly recommend them even if he weren't.)

I've also used SMG to clean a down sleeping bag for me and was happy with the service. If it is a good bag it needs a bit of TLC, in my opinion.

It's a decent Mountain Hardware 2-3 season bag & they're insistent it needs tumble dried for many hours on super low or the loft will refuse to reloft. Otherwise I'd wash it myself!

Both down bags probably need more tender treatment.

@urchaidh thanks for link as they may be able to pronounce on whether or not my Good Tent is too UV damaged for repair (suspect it is, - super thin lightweight fly sheet is failing at all for anchor points and hasn't reprooofed well, also getting generally saggy and small-tear prone). If so I will be sad, but it has seen a lot of use and that's the cost of super lightweight I suppose.

For this, and cleaning the duvet, I just use suitable temperature water and soap in the bath and trample with my feet. Not recommended for down I don't suppose. But at least my feet get washed once a year:-)

Some cheap synthetic bags' packabilities decrease markedly upon washing, if they have too much foam in. My 27-year-old SnugPak has survived several machine washes.

This has reminded me to book my three-man tent in to SMG for a new groundsheet.

Could you not just stick a synthetic bag in the washing machine on a warm, windy day?

SMG (Musselburgh) clean down bags, but it's not cheap. They don't mention cleaning synthetics you could ask.

Does anyone know a sleeping bag cleaning service in Edinburgh? Hoping to avoid a half day at the launderette*.

My unwanted mice have PEED ON MY SYNTHETIC BAG. No. Bad mice.

*I might as well get the two down bags cleaned as well as so far I've only ever aired them... (they're not foosty, they just smell like, um, sleeping bag).
