Substance* Cycles has opened at 6a Montague Terrace.

Opening evening tonight (6th of Jan 2026) 7-9pm with snacks and drinks etc TimTams will be provided I am told. And all welcome to pop by.

*I kept forgetting the name of the shop but MacKenzie told me (and his wife) to think of "illegal substances". And yes, that worked. Now I remember the name.

Looks to be far bigger than any other bike repair place I've seen (I think the building was a car repair place originally?). Appears to be a chain, with about 20 locations across the UK (half in London). Anyone know anything more about them?

May still be true, but the one they were looking at didn’t work out.

One Edinburgh shop likely to have new owners by end of month.

Went to the Evans Cycles reopening on Friday. Free drinks, pizza, Endura merino buffs and also a raffle wjtb good prizes such as turbo trainers, bike stands, handlebars, saddles etc. Also 20% off on everything that night.

A fun night and good chats. Quite a lot of bike mechanics from other shops came along so good to see them all supporting each other.

The shop looks good. Better than Biketrax. The top floor is more MTB stuff. Downstairs clothing, parts and various bikes.

I was glad to learn that they retained all the staff during the limbo months.

Edinburgh Bike Coop closing its Leeds store.

Like all retail the bike trade is very hard at moment.

Was looking for boots in Rose St on Monday and many places had no-one buying. Tisos did as 20% off boots at moment. They sponsor some local events so happy to buy. Amazon don't.
Likewise LB has bought childseats from EBC as they have supported events here. (Not sure about Leeds).

Had a chip on my shoulder about Evans ever since they were the only bike shop that wouldn't take a stack of EdFoC programmes off my hands for public to pick up, because of central office rules. Took a handful for the staff / staffroom but it gave me really bad 'corporation plays at local bike shop' vibes. Obviously not the fault of local folks but whatever private equity vampires run head office these days.

I'm assumed it was to have more space. Lochrin was quite a pokey (but excitingly pokey) place for a shop where you're continually moving quite big items of stock in and out. I can't imagine the rent at the basin being less than Lochrin Place - even Akva disappeared.

After Robin Williamson retired though the shop IMO lost its slightly old fashioned charm, and anyway the newer team was more into gravel biking and slammed handlebars, so the Brompton franchise went, along with the Carradice-and-socks vibe. I tried to like Biketrax after that but I simply wasn't in their target demographic, and I think I only visited the canalside shop a couple of times. To be honest I felt as out of place as I do at EBC these days.

Were BikeTrax compelled to move out of Lochrin Buildings due to rising rents/evil landlords/needing more space or did they just fancy the look of the canalside location? It was always a slightly weird but generally helpful place before but just became unusably terrifying post-move.

With what they had before really. As Bike Trax discovered being a bike shop with indirect access is a barrier. Insurers insisted stock was moved downstairs due to location too. Evans will install more security I'm sure. Basement was used but wasn't public before but maybe opened up now. Upstairs had cafe with @Bill's Towpath Talks which was a great idea.
Evans is generally a bike warehouse sort of vibe. Their service / click and collect team was helpful I found before on the few occasions I needed something not available elsewhere.

York Cycleworks started as a Coop with advice/encouragement from EBC.

“

“We’re a shop that offers servicing; we’ve got the best workshop and mechanics round here. We offer what the internet can’t, but it’s not enough. We’re still bonkers busy with repairs but it just doesn’t bring us enough money.

"We just wanted to look after our patch. But times have changed and other’s want a slice of our pie. We’ve packed it in now so we don’t cause any ripples rather than try and soldier on.”

The undercutting of online retailers, coupled with the industry over-production during the pandemic, have been sources of difficulty for several retailers, and York Cycleworks is no exception.

“We need to be selling carbon road bikes from £3000 upwards to make a profit, that’s just where the margin is. There’s no margin in a £650 bike.

“

I’ve just heard that biketrax customers still haven’t had bikes returned. The administrators say they’ve not officially taken control yet and the owners have deleted comments on their instagram saying they’re trying to figure out how to return the bikes. Must be a horrible situation for anyone involved.
