I broke my hardtail chain before xmas (ironically just after popping in to EBC to chat about the worn drivetrain). I slammed through the right handlebar into the ground, the most painful off I've had for a wee while.

The replacement chain broke last week, but not while I was pedalling hard. They don't make em like they used to!

If you think breaking a chain is impressive though, you ain't seen nothing yet:

Hehehehehe! Now that would have made me laugh as I tried to work out what on earth had happened.

It's definitely the damage to pride that hurts most though isn't it?

Hah! Bunch of amateurs!

I was putting down so much brute force one morning a couple of years back, that on take off from a set of lights I snapped the chain and hurled myself straight over the handlebars, doing a full 360 in the air, landing on my backside with the bike hitting me in the back.

And do you think a single person at the bus stop beside me offered a helping hand? Hmmmm?

Oh that's the worst when that happens. Had similar when I was turning right at Ferry/Newhaven road junction, stood on pedals to go and my foot slipped off and I hit the ground. Waddled off to pavement. Bought clipless pedals soon after.

I had planted myself confidently in front of the car that had decided to occupy the ASL only to snap my chain on take off... shuffled disconsolately to the pavement. Some you win some you lose.

Indeed. I took my time with it, sorted it properly, wound down and rested basically. Whistled while I worked, and all the while expected the owner of the biiiiig house on the sidestreet whose wall I was propped against to come out and tell me, as a ruffian, to move along.

Better indeed. And far easier to fix a flat on a bike than a car.

Got down to the Innocent and it was rutted horrible ice. With a thin film of water over it. Would have had trouble walking let alone cycling. So I carried on through to Niddrie Mains Road, but before getting there had a girl in a C3 pull out in front of me at a small roundabout without even the quickest of glances in my direction (lucky I was paying attention, seriously, she didn't check the way at all, didn't slow, nothing) and the traffic was awful on the main road (is this the first day where EVERYONE is back at school or work?), and it’s really difficult to filter along there. Old lady on the way past Cameron Toll squeezed by with about a foot to spare (before getting held up by traffic) then heading up the hill (Clerk Street at that point? Newington Road?) got a flat.

Still.

Better than taking the car or bus… :P
