I know I'm a bit late to the party but for recommendations for future viewers... we like our Roland Add-a-bike which is a tagalong which allows you to also have a child seat on the rear rack. A friend got one first so she could take her 4 and 1 year olds on the school run together. We got one on ebay locally last year and it's working very well. It was a bit of a challenge to get the rack on my electric bike (hub gear and disc brakes) but the electric cycle co bike shop sorted it and it's been super during lockdown.

A pal of mine tried a home made version of the Towwhee with some success. This was with a kid who just needed a bit of help on longer or steeper climbs. He used a long tape sling, with the bungee 'cows tail' from a buoyancy aid to provide the elasticity.

Probably not appropriate on roads with more than the odd passing car.

I have an ancient tagalong that comes with a BMX bike. BUT only hAd it on road once AND WEE BOYS RAN INTO me at Bruntsfield (this w when I first took it)

I did take my kids out on it but only up and down the wol pATH. ONLY THE YOUNGEST EVER PEDALLED. (I found out when the youngest’s turn came after several years)

It has the feels of a very heavy pole - rigidly struck on the back of your bike with a BMX stuck on the pole.

Err, because that is what it is.

I am not selling this too well, but they are most welcome to take it and never give it back to me as once out the garage it ain’t getting back in

I went with a FollowMe, attaches through the rear axle so very stable. Well made and sturdy. Big advantage is that it's fairly easy to unhitch and let the wee man ride himself for a bit.

If you can get over to Porty you could borrow it (and the wee man's IB 16") for a trial. Just need to fit the custom skewer on your bike, need a wee bit of clearance around the dropouts.

Our 5yo loves going out on our Wee Ride Pro Pilot. The nylon tyre isn't exactly built for speed but I've never had any problems with it aside a couple of times attempting a 3-point turn which jolted the seatpost slightly, but that was easily rectified.

@hanlchief, if the tagalong is really that bad I would be interested in the rack. Low priority though as it's for a second bike. I can't bring myself to pay more for a rack than I did for the tagalong.

IainMcr : anything that attaches to a rack is far superior to anything attaching to the seat tube in terms of stability & path tracking.

My Burley Piccolo could do with finding a new keeper but it is a bit ragged after 12,000+ miles.

With a bit of mechanical assistance, you could have the Burley rack from the tandem if you replace it with the rack off the tag along

I used to be an owner of the Adventure Ditto one you posted an image of above. It was great, although I had to replace the single-speed freewheel after the first one rusted solid (using it in winter, road salt got into it). Otherwise very good, solid steel frame, folds up for storage, robust but not too heavy. Bought it (barely used) second hand, two children got the use of it over five years, then sold for not much less than I paid for it.

The Islabikes one looks great and I like the fact it attaches to a rear rack instead of seat post. There used to be another model that fixed to a rear rack: Burley maybe? Rather pricey if I recall.

The Ditto one can be had for not much but is of reasonable quality IMHO. I think there's a six-speed version too.

To save fiddling around with the seat post clamp attachment I just bought a spare seat post and saddle which was permanently attached to the tagalong. Easier to swap that for the usual seat post/saddle - could be done in 30 seconds. Handy if using as child transport to classes, etc. Stow seatpost/saddle in a pannier, arrive at destination, swap, leave tagalong locked at destination, go for a solo ride/shopping errand, re-attach tagalong seat post/saddle, re-stow usual seat post/saddle, ready to ride with child again.
