Passed by this today. Lots off work going on on different pylons in the wider area with roads and paths happily passing underneath the lines. Looks like the cycle path is closed just to provide a work site for parking and storage next to the substation.

They do have some fun looking kit though.

According to MLC's website : The work is deemed “essential for the management of Covid-19”.

I'd have thought the risk of transmission between workies and the general public as they pass the site is almost zero (especially as most of the work seems to be taking place 100ft in the air!).

Applying the same flawed logic, every road with roadworks should be closed completely.

@MB - absolutely! The diversion passes under the same line in several places and that's not a problem. There are three sets of lines running west and, based on the pylons I can recall seeing temporary road laid to, all three sets are being worked on.

The path is still open under the northernmost set of lines, and the diversion appear to turn off the path directly under the middle set and head through the middle of the traveller site.

When they strung new cables through Portobello a few years back it wad all done without shutting down roads.

Many of the cables from this substation pass directly over the travellers' site, so I would have thought the protective measures allowing for this would ensure the path right next door is also safe. The substation has its own dedicated vehicle access so that's not an excuse.

Strikes me as Scottish Power closing it because they can and because Midlothian Council are rolling over and letting them.

I can't remember them closing this last time but ... A lot of local families will be annoyed as well.

It is always annoying when different rules are applied to roads and cyclepaths, even ones with NCN status.

I have seen cyclists using the footpath alongside Salters Road. A more pleasant alternative most of the way is through Dalkeith Country Park.

I have never been along the track east of the Dalkeith bypass. Isn't there a travellers' site there/

Wondering when this was coming, I've been watching them lay out the kit around the line of pylons heading north over the Dalkieth estate for a few weeks now. Pretty crap timing given how busy that path is at the moment.

I'm assuming their not closing any of the roads this line crosses over so I don't see why the need to close this path. They have good access to the site from the west. There's no way I'm taking my kids on that diversion.

Cutting through the Dalkeith Estate between The Smeaton Gate and the Town Gate may be an option for some routes.

This is closed from tomorrow (Wed 10th) for up to a fortnight - link

The diversion doesn't look brilliant but unless you want to ride up the hill to Langside/Smeaton Shaw there isn't a lot of other options. If you're heading to Musselburgh or Dalkeith you're probably as well just staying on Salter's Road the whole way and ignore the railway path.
