Cycle Scotland has some quite Marmite reviews on google!

The Santander Bike is a preferred mode of transport for many a food-courier in London. Year pass, no maintenance costs, slow and steady.

@algo - has your neighbour considered using a Just Eat bike? I know that people do use them for that, and the T&C don't forbid it.

Thanks for the info tarmachan.

I'd like to help my neighbour our - he's a good guy so will keep my eye out for a decent hybrid for him... he's quite new to cycling so the easier to ride the better I reckon... he didn't much like borrowing my bike, but I imagine that's very similar to getting on someone else's temperamental horse.

In about 2011 I had a trial day working there with a view to getting a summer job. I lasted half a day before I just gave up.
The bloke running it was a complete crackpot. The bikes were all wrecks (sounds like it hasn't changed in 9 years) and he charged a fortune for hiring them. In the end before I jumped ship, I ended up simply advising people who came looking to hire for a week or two that it would be cheaper to just buy a 2nd hand bike from the bike station and donate it back after their holiday, rather than spend £200 hiring an unsafe bike there.
Saying that repair and maintenance was the hirer's responsibility sounds exactly like the sort of thing they would do.

My neighbour, who works now for various delivery companies, hired a bike for this purpose from Cycle Scotland bike hire. Odd choice I admit but that's what he did it turns out. It's a Trek hybrid which is a fairly decent bike. The other day his rear hanger snapped and all the expected damaged happened to the chain and rear derailleur.

Before I realised this was a hire bike and not his own I had managed to source a new rear hanger and I had a new rear derailleur so just needed new chain and gear cable - the existing cable was very frayed. On inspecting it I discovered neither of the brakes worked because the pads (and rims) were massively worn.

When he said it was a hire bike I asked why he didn't just take it back and get it fixed by them or get a replacement, and apparently he was told it was his responsibility to fix. I was pretty astonished - they claim that it must have been damage he caused himself. Either way the state of the brakes after 3 months use was definitely not reasonable for a hire bike.

Does anyone have any experience of this place? Seems very odd service to me.

Also - just wondering if anyone has a decent hybrid bike they might be looking to sell - for someone 6 foot 2. I'd like to to help him out - he's not had a great deal of luck with his hire bike.
