@frenchy although there are people around I think the lab is still closed for the Tuesday drop in sessions.

@Snowy - I have, and that's what showed me that it wasn't that hard, provided one is competent with a soldering iron (which I'm not, due to having no experience). It does need soldering, though: I think the usb port is a surface-mount addition.

Greenroofer, I assume you've seen the ifixit guide?
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Garmin+Edge+520+USB+connector+repair/92578

It's not immediately clear if the port is actually soldered or clips on somehow?

I've fixed stuff that needed micro-soldering with conductive paint. I still have the wee bottle somewhere if you want to give it a crack?

If you're not in a rush, and would like to try doing it yourself, there's normally a weekly electronics open evening thing at Summerhall. You can borrow their tools, and someone will watch over your shoulder to check you're not doing anything stupid.

+1 on this

I have a well used Garmin 1000 Explore and the battery life is starting reduce - a problem for an audaxer. I'd like to know that I can trust one of these places that replaces batteries - eg waterproofing is important.

So I have an old Garmin Edge 520. It's stopped charging because there's a poor connection at the micro-USB port. Garmin won't repair it, but they will sell me a replacement for £100. Places online will replace the port for ~£40. Before I just go with the first website that comes up on Google, do you have any experience of local (or national) repairers who have done similar jobs well for you in the past.

I ought to be able to do it myself - it's just a case of levering off the front and soldering on a new port, but I don't have the necessary soldering kit or skills.
