Yes I did read before I sent, obviously not carefully enough.

This is modern media - work from home, no subs.

Upside - it’s harder to get misquoted.

Years since I talked to a journalist and hoped they’d pick the right words in the right order from a ramble.

I use melville drive as its a shorter direct route home at 18 mph from summerhall after a long day at work, avoiding students, joggers, children, dogs and their walkers, tourists, wayward drinkers, sports equipment and barbequers.

the principle of the Spaces for People programme to cut road space

It isn't cutting road space at all. To do that you would have to build on it, or start digging up Tarmac. The road space is exactly the same as it was before, because roads aren't only for cars...

Indeed. It is a main road like any other. Cyclists like to take direct and convenient routes, same as motor cars (or even more so, due to energy expended). Of course all main roads should have segregated cycleways, whether they have a parallel one or not

Melville drive has always had some paint on the road I think?? All three routes Very heavily used by cyclists. (Sri Chinmoy mile North Side meadows to go to Uni or Tills bookshop segregated 50 metres / Main road / South side path to Go to Furriers (gone in last 5 years only) or EBC - ie completely other direction)

EEN has Robot generated copy now I think

If the parallel offerings are such perfect alternatives there, why do so many cyclists still use Melville Drive? Even if I don't use that road, it's obvious that there's demand to cycle there and so it should be made safe for those people. (Preaching to the choir I know)

should be banished from public life until they understand“

That probably includes Boris then.

He’s about to try to bamboozle the Scottish public with ‘we saved Scottish jobs (furloughed), which an independent Scotland couldn’t afford to do’.

“

And the UK Treasury stepped in to save the jobs of a third of Scotland’s entire workforce and kept the wolves at bay for tens of thousands of Scottish businesses.

More than ever, this shows what we can achieve when we stand together, as one United Kingdom.

“

Even in these days of magic money trees, the budget for these schemes is limited and while organisations like Spokes will argue they don’t go far enough, other cyclists recognise some of the ideas are likely to cause more problems than they solve, will be of limited benefit, and the money could be better spent elsewhere.

There are plans for cycle lanes on Melville Drive, for example, even though there is already a parallel cycle path and another one on the north side of the Meadows. With nearly 100 acres of open space this is one location where social distancing isn’t a problem.
