@stiltskin - one of many gaps in my DF bike knowledge! Also used to get origin of Ridley wrong.
"They made custom bikes for local Belgian bike shops. Seven years later, in 1997, Aerts took the final step towards realising his dream by founding Ridley Bikes. He named it after his favourite English film director Ridley Scott."

@Tulyar - shared bike schemes have arguably had a big impact on getting a much broader range of people riding. All ages and ethnic groups. They also do cycle where they think is safe so never surprised if seen on pavements tho.
Yesterday two JustEat users went straight across at King's junction into Tarvit St head to head with traffic there. Drivers didn't react much as bikes stayed at left side and squeezed by. I also note Valleyfield is much used as direct contraflow cycling route now too.

Morningside Mellis has a unique offering and draws in luxury spend from the whole of South Edinburgh. It's quite possible that people drive to shop in Waitrose using the rooftop car park and divert to Mellis.

I would not expect to be able to park my automobile conveniently otherwise. I have only ever travelled there by bicycle. I expect I'd do that more often if I didn't know the French street value of their cheese jeezo that is some mark up.

On the Morningside Traders front - my pal Tam’s wife is an excellent florist in Juni Green. She parks in the layby outside her shop. But Tam does deliveries. Quite wide area of west Lothian etc. the Morningside place could hire a young person to walk deliveries to Morningsiders?? Also it would be very tricky to park outside that shop. Most customers would park streets away and walk so I feel these traders are moaning instead of thinking creatively. Also who drives to a deli? Mental.

I doubt the Cervelo was Boris's - bike shop in the pictures was in Nottingham, probably just what they had on the workstand at the time. Seemed to favour a stolid hybrid (a Boardman AFAIK) when he was London Mayor.

Just as well that we have Big Bike Revival, offering bike repairs AND lessons to help you do this yourself, as the £50 voucher scheme is about as well thought through as Westminster policies on COVID test & trace/ferry services/almost any other current policy

Refreshing also that by supporting free/discounted access to the 3 main public bike hire operations in Scotland people are getting access to robust & functional bikes and EAPC, far more readily than the vaguely described bike giveaways. As with Car Club cars one bike hire bike can be used 6-8 times per day by 6-8 different people, and the e-bikes (EAPC) are (in Glasgow) hiring at twice the rate seen for regular bikes.

One idea might be to get public bike hire available in all major Scottish towns, especiallt if this also created a revenue, and jobs that support community cycle centres. Models on which this could be based are in Glasgow & Stirling especially, where Bike for Good and Recyk a Bike provide resource centres for many cycle-linked activities

Watched Ch4 News as usual last night. Jon Snow in action with stripey socks on a drop bar bike. (These all look the same to me ;-) but sure it will be a decent English brand like a Mercian? Not a Chinese Italian Cervelo like BJ).
Whole bulletin had a blokey 'cycling's great' bit from BJ replete with jaunty helmet with go-pro. Considering his toxic lack of appeal to many voters now anything he supports maybe becomes tainted? Many parts of England can't forgive him for the inadequate response to floods so his enthusiasm for cycling isn't going to go down well there. Interview in cafe with sports cyclists in background. The odd thing is that London has plenty of European type commuting. Generally there still is a wilful confusion between sports cycling and just using a bike for a few miles.
Jon Snow of course has just got on with cycling in his own way - flamboyant socks on bike and flamboyant ties on air.
Doubt BJ will cycle much now? Or does he go full mamil on his Cervelo?

NC said “all very interesting but the world has changed, these studies aren’t valid any more” - revealing that he believes cars are still the default.

JMcL said that the TFL study he looked at wasn’t relevant as the places looked at weren’t like Edinburgh or the schemes weren’t comparable.

Melanie Main was next up and told them that the TFL study was a good starting point but there was a huge number of studies in different places all pointing to the same result.

Even if the promises mostly fail to materialise, it's a big step forward if they update the design book or whatever that is called, which does seem to be one big strand of this.

It's new-ish. A lot of the 2bn was going to be bus funding until lockdown started. Seems kind of reasonable to at least start to spend that before committing more.
