@wingpig these Cushy Doos (wood pigeons technically) as my pal tom calls them are very annoying birds. I am hearing your storage solution is ingenuous. Even after you have removed the Bay Leaves

Hmm, seems the cone itself has a part number Y-3AE-98030. Hopefully I can pry the seals off and reuse them without disaster.

Expect a post in the rubbish maintenance thread shortly...

@wingpig

Many thanks for checking in your bits box but sadly I don't think those hubs have cones suitable for my hub. The FH-RM30 has M10 x 15 mm cones whereas I need M10x16mm for the missing "special" left hand cone (so close!). The FH-4600 diagram annoyingly doesn't give measurements for the cones. But they don't look like my one - the seal ring is very different.

Bike station it is! Let's hope they have something.

Thanks again

@gembo These were just tucked behind the bay tree. Nice and dry under there. Shifted them today as I took the rest of the top off the tree now that the pigeons have moved on.

I'll pop out in the light of morning to see what the two rear hubs out in the shed are. Almost definitely Shimano but no idea of the model; they may have common parts.

Oh, and the dust seals etc are all in good shape (amazingly). It's just cones I need.

Hi folks,

I have a jolly fine rear wheel built on a Shimano FH-M570 hub (Deore LX circa 2002).

On rebuilding it last weekend I found the cones are finally showing signs of wear. The races are OK though so I would prefer not to rebuild the wheel. Here's the parts list:

https://www.paul-lange.de/tradepro/shop/artikel/docs/Explosionszeichnungen/SHIMANO/FH_M570.pdf

The parts I want are #9 "Y-3AE 03000" and #11 "Y-30P 98030". Both are discontinued by Shimano. The former at least is available from SJS cycles and allegedly from various ebay sellers. The latter doesn't seem to be available anywhere

I am trying to get in touch with Biketrax and similarly will pay a visit to the bike station to root but do the mechanical wizards here have any secret sources for ancient bits?

Alternatively is there a way to find out which modern Shimano cones might be suitable substitutes?

Cheers,

-D
