The work at former splash bathroom warehouse turned access thieves is really quite something now a massive hole cut into the path. Think it is Scottish water, anyway up the detour and back down I went as keen to keep out of the wind and away from motors.

Back on WoL path just before Currie there is a stream that used to run across the path. It seems to have been culverted under the path now or diverted. There is a row of pebbles. Over the path marking the spot.

Further up just before Balerno at the high density housing built on the site of the Tannery, there is a new cycle path from the flats to the WoL path, not open yet but might divert one or two drivers once or twice from their motors.

Update to this message. I found the initial one confusing.

WATER OF LEITH WALKWAY CLOSURE

This has been clarified. Updated message from the Active Travel Team

From 12th October, for 25 weeks, Spylaw Car Park will be closed Monday to Fridays (24hrs/day) and will only re-open for the weekend. There will be pedestrian access via the set of steps from Gillespie Road and a sign posted diversion for cyclists will be via Bridge Road/Spylaw Street/Spylaw Park.

On Thursday 15th October the Water of Leith Walkway/National Cycle Network Route 75 will be closed downstream of Colinton Tunnel. This is a ONE DAY CLOSURE ONLY. I had initially asked the contractors to avoid morning/evening commute times and suggested they started after 9am and ideally finished by 4pm. However, there is a counter in place at Colinton Tunnel and the evidence from this shows the quietest time to be the mornings, they are therefore planning to go in early (circa 7am) and hope to be off site around 2pm (please note these times are not guaranteed). Unfortunately we are not able to sign post a suitable diversion and would ask people to plan ahead and use an alternative route.

Closures are in place on the Water of Leith Walkway/National Cycle Network Route 75 at Baberton Loan, Juniper Green. Diversions must be followed and we ask all users to be courteous and responsible. These path closures/diversions will be in place for approx. 20 weeks. For updates and full information regarding the diversion routes please visit: https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/in-your-area/investments-in-your-area/water-of-leith/old-mill-and-juniper-green-cso

Last time it came up in the local paper, I seem to remember that the reporter got stuck in traffic from the crossroads and ruled against the development.

We (the government) should just compulsory purchase the field margin. As it doesn't have planning permission the land value is much lower than it would be after permission is obtained.

We've seen (i.e. at Kinleith mill) that huge developments can happen leaving adjacent cycle routes as unlit mudbaths, so we can hardly trust them to develop it properly on their own.

@jonty

The wrangling to get the path along that field tarmacced started about 30 years ago.

The landowner (Cala homes, I believe) refuses any improvements until planning permission is given for housing, so they can then develop it.

It took about 20 years just to get the hole made in the stone wall. Back in the day, you had to climb over it. (Yes, I have climbed over it, bike on shoulder)

And so the impasse continues..,

(Landowners should not be allowed to hold the country to ransom - Ed )

I was taken down that route today and it was a bit of a revelation. The council should get started on the landowner wrangling to have it paved ASAP (and filter the rat run).

A few times recently we've gone over the field between Currie and the playpark in Juniper Green, then along the car rat run route to the bypass bridge. (The hole in the wall at the playpark end is too narrow for the child trailer, but wide enough for the tandem tagalong)

It only leaves you with the short stretch from Gillespie junction to that first turning into Juniper Green to deal with. Still don't like it with pre-schoolers as the thought of all the fumes getting into their lungs makes me rather guilty (plus what if they let go) but might be an option for you?

The field is muddy, but 99% firm footing and since it's much shorter than riding on the WoL you will be much less muddy on aggregate.

It looks like the bridge will be shut for one day to replace a tiny bit of wood on the parapet, but it's only one day so whatever.

Six months of probably a very narrow path, when it's already an inadequate width at busy times. Wow! It's going to be tough to get the trailer down there to nursery at all :~Z

Via the council's active travel team:

"From 12th October, for 25 weeks, Spylaw Car Park will be closed Monday to Fridays.

On Thursday 15th October the Water of Leith Walkway/National Cycle Network Route 75 will be closed downstream of Colinton Tunnel. Unfortunately we are not able to sign post a suitable diversion and would ask people to plan ahead and use an alternative route.

If I'm reading it right, it's only the car park that'll be closed for six months - the walkway itself will only be closed on the 15th, but at least part of it will be a "temporary footpath" when it is open, which may or may not be particularly suitable for cycling.
