There's been a lot.of.military activity recently. A400 the other day, C130 last week, and the C17 this week, and the A330 tankers are out in the North sea most days.

The Typhoon wasn't on Flightradar 24 maybe suggesting an actual incident as mentioned above.

@Arellcat: It was a Typhoon; I heard it...

Thats basically why I was 99% certain it was a Typhoon: single seater jet disappearing at a rate of knots while making a heck of a racket. At the last Leuchars air show the Typhoons performing the 'sunset salute' were significantly louder than the Tornados that had done it in previous years, giving quite a different feel to the ceremony.

Looks like the C-17 and Typhoon activities were likely unrelated, then.

If there's a genuine emergency then it's usually the Typhoons they keep at Conningsby which whoosh off in a dreadful hurry. If they're Bear-entering-airspace-level desperate they'll not bother getting clear of the land before exceeding the sound guideline.

What kind of receiver do you use to view ADS-B data?

It was a Typhoon; I heard it as it performed a long loop over Midlothian. I jumped onto ADS-B, and managed to see it heading away northeast, Gilmerton sort of direction.

That would be a C-17 Globemaster you spotted landing at EDI. As air traffic is a lot quieter than usual the RAF have regularly been practising landing/approaches at civilian airports.

About half an hour ago I watched (mostly through binoculars) as a large, T-tailed four-engined aircraft that looked to me like a military transport of some kind approached from the south/south-west, turned west over the Firth of Forth and begin what looked like a landing approach to Edinburgh Airport. As it passed in front of the bridges it looked flippin' massive. Couldn't make out any markings but it didn't seem to carry any kind of commercial branding.

Then just a couple of minutes ago I heard jet noise and just had time to get the binoculars on what I'm 99% certain was a Typhoon heading eastwards in a bit of a hurry.

Anyone have any idea if something 'interesting' is going on?
