“I'll confess to not knowing that cyclocross was so much older than mountain biking.“

Yes, people were getting muddy and using bikes off road long before a few Californians modified ‘paperboy bikes’ for going downhill (fast).

Of course those Californians didn’t understand mud and later produced U-brakes which weren’t entirely fit for purpose for UK conditions...

@chdot, great videos. I'll confess to not knowing that cyclocross was so much older than mountain biking.

Strangely Youtube thinks that the first one is in Portuguese. Which means that if you watch it with "English" subtitles it's very confusing.

@chdot - I knew there was a reason I favour 7/8 speeds

12 speed has to cope with boom length being altered for riders. Sram long rear mech got wrapped round a bit when I left too much chain on after 195cm rider try out. Also used to haul trailers - once with three boxed e-bikes on.

Actual 12 speed chain plates started to wear and snap after a year.

Belt drive with 8 speed would be less maintenance but not so much range. May fit one of our two used e-bikes as Nihola frame design has the removable part allow for belt.

@wfb - had shop green Stowaway nicked. 3 speed came from @darkerside in some sort of deal.

Next year, maybe I'll cycle outside, and perhaps the following year I'll be light enough to ride my carbon wheels without breaking them...

I looked at the Shand <strike>Leatherette</strike> Leveret on Instagram. Wondered if a belt drive Alfine 8 bike would be worth owning. Unusual that they have fitted mudguards on a commuter bike. Would be second or third 'Scottish' bike (with assorted Japanes/Taiwanese parts) - Paper Bicycle being the other. Had single speed and 8 speed demos at old shop but sold them on. No longer made afaik.
Or I could just put new rear mech on (rusty) Fuego - 12 speed stuff wears out. Was experiment just to see how it would do.
Enjoy riding any bike or low down trike. Decent front light from a hub makes riding feel good. Extra drag good too for fitness.

I've mainly been cycling in loops around parts of the city this year. Cycling through town when it is quiet is a joy. In the first lockdown I even managed to zig-zag between the white lines while going down the Mound. I've pootled here and there, I've revved up Dundas Street and the Mound, cycled a hire bike between Morningside and the FRB dock within an hour (no way am I paying that extra 5p a minute!) and now avoid having to cycle back home in the dark each day. Man, I love cycling.
