SRD have been through Cowgate/Grassmarket twice at night in recent years, neither very late, but after dark and with child in seat. Neither a good experience,

What I should have said is that it is more of a success for walking through.

Cars and bikes are at the fringes...

There are bike racks but I wouldn't leave a bike there overnight!

SRD - sorry to hear that, as you say it is a straight run through to Fountainbridge - my journeys have all been daytime.

Hmmmm.....have been through Cowgate/Grassmarket twice at night in recent years, neither very late, but after dark and with child in seat. Neither a good experience, which is a pity as it is a nice direct run through to Fountainbridge.

Laidback - you are right - ~Grassmarket - Cowgate is my preferred route to Waverley Court when I have a meeting scheduled in that lovely building - it is normally a decent road to cycle. I have not been through it at night for many years but as I recollect I didn't like it as too many drunks in too small a space so again good move to give them more room.

Grassmarket has been a success though. Cars are now at the fringes. Drunk people now have more space!

Actually I like it and even walk Max through there.

Drivers can still drive through when bollards are down or broken but they do this slowly as elsewhere in Europe.

what chance banning cars from the city centre? This apparently is normal in some European cities but it is only fringe types like us who think this is a good idea in Edinburgh. Depends where you align yourself on the continent - Edinburgh seems to be more linked to Athens where the drivers get round the ban on driving by having two sets of number plates - one for Mon/Wed/Fri and the other for Tues/Thurs/Sun

"
Edinburgh’s City Centre Neighbourhood Partnership [ECCNP] is developing a new ‘community plan’ for the area, and seeks the views of anyone who “lives, works, studies in, or visits, the city centre” …
