An excellent outcome, but the Guardian really could have done a bit better contextualising and challenging National Highways' comment at the end there - as work by HRE Group has shown they still have an *extremely* liberal interpretation of "...absolutely no alternative" and are intending to push ahead with quite a few infills. That they will now all ostensibly be subject to planning applications in advance is a good thing, but as this case has shown NH are not above quid pro quos(or naked effing bribery if you're feeling uncharitable) to get their way, and they appear determined to wreck as many potential AT and heritage routes as they can for some mad reason.

There's a map with all the locations marked: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1_9GtFIDW-QuYPvp8vBcSUD4gH9cOMdZt&ll=56.327585790206165%2C-3.501197951659738&z=8

Couple in East Lothian but like most of them, they are rural and very unlikely to be used for rail or walking routes any time soon.

One that isn't mentioned in the article is a bridge over NCN 73 west of Kilmarnock: https://goo.gl/maps/ygw3hQ7SgksJwred7

The potential conversion of old railway lines into cycle and walking routes is being blocked by plans to infill more than 100 bridges, including more than 20 in Scotland, campaigners have claimed.
