The gold standard for home brew wind generators used to be a dc treadmill motor. They're simple and don't require much electronics to manage the output.

The switching motor in an ebike would output a nasty ac in reverse which would need a bit of electronics to produce a smooth dc to run any thing.

If I were building this I'd look at a broken turbo, take the magnet off and run a pulley to motor. Connect the motor directly a big lead battery this will act as a big capacitor to smooth the power draw so you can efficiently pedal and use your gears to keep a nice cadence.

Everything else can run directly off 12v with a little bit of work.

This could work as a generator / dynamo.

Amazon - DC12V/24V 35W Mini DC Gear Motor

Now the tricky bit is holding the bike steady, while at the same time connecting up the dynamo...

There are quite a few videos on youtube by folk who have done similar things. Of the few I watched, this seemed to be the most useful in terms of "How would I actually do this myself?": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVBR3HNjlYw

Related, if not useful - cyclist makes toast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4O5voOCqAQ

Anyone know if an e-bike hub motor can be made to operate in reverse i.e. as a generator?

Are these things electronically controlled, or are they more basic brushed motors with DC in, DC out?

You could presumably borrow the sensors from an EPAC to make your EPAT.

Red live, yellow/green earth, blue to bits

Do like the cheaper Heath Robinson aspect of this. Not generating the power just pedalling to stop the lights going out.

Thinking about it, it would be quite good if it could power the WiFi router as well, to cover the power-cut situation*. Seems there's been a few recently...

*Although it's also quite nice not having any lecky during a power cut

Sounds like I need to make a specification ;-)

- Any member of the family must be able to power it -> turbo must fit any size of derailleur bike, incl. kids.
- Doesn't matter if it doesn't "feel" like riding a real bike
- Must power a small monitor (~20W), some PC speakers (~5W) and a RaspberryPi* (2.5W) or laptop (~20W), so maybe 50W would be enough (?)
- Small battery backup to cover fluctuations, but no more than 10 mins without pedalling

I think the problem is going to be finding a suitable dynamo, capable of 50W

*I'm not sure if RaspberryPi e.g. RPi3 has enough graphics capability to stream video e.g. HD ???

(New thread from http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=20194&page=84#post-346847)
