They're simple and don't require much electronics to manage the output. </p> <p>The switching motor in an ebike would output a nasty ac in reverse which would need a bit of electronics to produce a smooth dc to run any thing.</p> <p>If I were building this I'd look at a broken turbo, take the magnet off and run a pulley to motor.
