Final stage of the Corstorphine project about to get underway, making permanent the temporary pavement widening on Manse Road and Kirk Loan.

Welcome improvements, but the whole sorry saga is a lost opportunity.

The council spokesman said the works on Grange Street were part of a trial of a low traffic neighbourhood (LTN).

He said it meant residents and businesses would be able to "provide feedback on its effectiveness during the first six months of operation".

Making St John's Road/Station Road a signal controlled crossing, with a pedestrian crossing phase and a phase allowing vehicles to turn out of Station Road would add delay to vehicles travelling along St John's Road. Certainly more than the existing pedestrian crossing on St John's Road, which has no vehicle phase.

Some wag should ask if they have done any traffic or air pollution modelling.

A local businesswoman has launched a petition calling for traffic lights at a busy junction in Corstorphine, following recent crashes there. Helen Abbott, who runs the Gift Tree Corstorphine shop at the box junction of Station Road and St John’s Road, said she or her customers have to help pedestrians cross Station Road, with frustrated drivers edging out onto St John’s Road nose to toe with limited space for people to cross.

Helen also told the Evening News that she has seen at least four crashes there in the past six months and fears a future fatal crash as the junction is “an accident waiting to happen”. She also raised pollution concerns, with cars left queuing there for so long adding emissions to the air.

https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-woman-launches-petition-calling-for-traffic-lights-at-busy-junction-in-corstorphine-after-crashes-5289755

The Corstorphine LTN plans included making Station Road one-way, which would have addressed a lot of these issues. It was of course opposed by “concerned locals”, including the owner of The Gift Tree cafe.

Reform UK’s pledge to remove all low-traffic neighbourhoods from the council areas it controls looks to be achieved in record time after the 10 local authorities said they do not actually have any in place.

Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s chair, said last week there would be a “large-scale reversal” of existing LTNs in the 10 areas across England where the party won control of the councils in local elections on 1 May.

“We view these schemes with the same suspicion as mass immigration and net zero,” Yusuf told the Telegraph, adding: “You can expect, if you live in a Reform council, for there to be a much higher bar for any proposals for LTNs and for the large-scale reversal of these existing LTNs.”

Post lockdown, <strike>micromanagement</strike> mismanagement by councillors got the bus-gate moved from Links Gardens to Links Place and one-way only, opening up a whole new rat-run via Duncan Place.

The city council officers have now recommended the bus-gate be moved to back to Links Gardens (back to its original and best position during lockdown.)

The individuals on Leith CC don't want the bus-gate moved, they want it removed entirely. It's clear they are a bunch of self-interested drivers

Community Councils are supposed to represent their community, not come out with baseless claims about "increased traffic", "the community being evenly divided" and overriding the experts views on the position of the bus gate.

The community were 74% in favour, and total traffic counts were down across the scheme, with the exception of on Duncan Place (which is due to the location of the bus gate, which officers want to fix by moving it).

There's clearly 1 or 2 car-brained individuals on that CC, only thinking of their own interests.

“

Leith Links community council welcomed the fact that measures which had been found beneficial would be kept, but argued more consideration should have been given to the impact of the bus gate at Links Place and increased traffic on some roads just outside the low traffic neighbourhood (LTN).

The city council’s traffic regulation order (TRO) sub-committee agreed on February 18 to make the scheme permanent as it stands, though council officers are proposing a new TRO process to move the bus gate from Links Place to Links Gardens.

Looking at the photograph in the article, I don't think te buses are the problem.

It's worth bearing in mind that before the northern and western flanks of Glasgow's inner ring road were built, the city centre was hugely congested, and that was in the 1950s and 1960s. Glasgow was absolutely set on reducing traffic volumes in the city, and it's why Sauchiehall St and Buchanan St could be pedestrianised.

Since Edinburgh's only attempt (the western link road that would have connected Hermiston with Lothian Road) was barely built, and escaped the inner ring road nonsense almost entirely, and since we got rid of all the trains, buses and a few trams are all we've got. I don't think we need to give car driving too much room.

Readers with longer memories know that this goes at least as far back as the days of David Begg with his expensive Greenways and the first road closures in the city centre. Installed without a budget for future maintenance and paid for by pillaging the road and pavement repair budget, Greenways may have helped some bus routes but also began the backlog of road repairs we see today.

Plus an actual decent article from Ian Swanson / EEN, instead of the tosh he published previously about the same matter:

“

I’m absolutely delighted the Leith Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) has been made permanent today. This is the right decision for Leith, and will help to lock in the traffic reductions, safer streets and cleaner air that this scheme has already delivered.

A very clear response from London Fire Commissioner, Andy Rowe to a question at Fire Plenary last week from Emma Best AM about the impact of LTNs on fire brigade attendance times.

"We genuinely couldn't find any evidence of LTNs doing anything to our overall attendance times".

Come show your support for Leith’s LTN on Tuesday 18th Feb, outside City Chambers at 8.30am

Dear Liveable Leith supporter

LAST CHANCE TO SAVE THE LEITH LIVEABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD

With less than a week to go until the future of the Leith Liveable Neighbourhood is decided, and with the community council posting a misleading blog encouraging opposition to the scheme, the future of safer streets in Leith lies in the balance.

CAN YOU HELP?

Now is the last chance to email the councillors who will make the final decision and urge them to vote for safer streets. Please take a couple of minutes to explain in your own words how safer streets have improved your life and why you want them to be made permanent.

You can more info on how to do this, including a list of the councillors to contact and their email addresses, on the Liveable Leith website:

https://rd8993.wixsite.com/liveable-leith

Thank you for taking action for safer and more liveable streets in Leith!

CAN YOU JOIN US ON THE DAY?

The decision on the future of the Liveable Neighbourhood (also known as a Low Traffic Neighbourhood or LTN) will be made by the Council's Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) Sub-committee on Tuesday 18 February. Council meetings are open to the public, so some Liveable Leith supporters will be attending to watch the meeting (and give councillors a big round of applause if they make the right decision).

The meeting starts at 10am on 18th February at the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh. It might be a good idea to turn up a couple of minutes early. Full details on attending a council meeting can be found here: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/councillors-committees/attending-council-meetings

We hope to see you there!

Thank you for all your action to make Leith’s streets safer and more pleasant for everyone.

Regards,

Liveable Leith

The damage from one utility repair or tree root is surely far greater than anything inflicted by even the heaviest bus.

By comparison how many buses equate to a single HGV?
