Velogames is open for the Spanish Race

You just pick your team if you’ve done this before and you are automatically in both CCE and City Cycling Edinburgh as Retired Circus Bear predicted.

Lovely bit of child development there. Same tone as spilling his juice is as high a priority as the crash to him as he is only two.

Also children are very highly engineered mechanisms to give their parents a laugh. Encourages our care giving behaviour.

Was watching catch up "live" over breakfast yesterday with the 2 YO on my knee. Huge crash in the Womans Omnium race, people flying everywhere. Wee man says "ohhh nooooo" in the same tone as if he spills juice. Highly entertaining understatement. As ever can't believe everyone reasonably ok after such a massive crash. Horrifying.

@ejstubbs, oh I understand that choices need to be made. Did not realise the BBC were restricted in that way - odd because on the first full day of the Olympics they had BBC1, BBC2 and Red Button but I cannot recall if they were all showing different things, maybe not.

Perhaps I'll just need to be happy that I stumbled across a few events that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. I shan't be forking out for a Discovery+ subscription just to have access to (presumably) everything...

@crowriver: I'd struggle to find coverage on the BBC, maybe some on Eurosport.

Eurosport paid £1.1billion for the primary rights to the Olympics Europe-wide for the period 2018-2024. They sub-license to national broadcasters such as the BBC, but the terms state that the BBC can show no more than 2 live events at a time. So a lot of the lack of coverage on the BBC will be due to that. Some of the more obscure stuff might be shown in their highlights programmes, which can then be watched on iPlayer (though some folks - myself included - find that the iPlayer search facility is not very straightforward and it can be difficult to locate specific events).

Been catching up on the track cycling. Madison is insane! Also watched women's marathon, tried to find the women's 20k race walking but no sign of it anywhere on television or online. Certainly seems like only certain sports are deemed popular or televisual enough to broadcast to the Western Anglo audience. Golf, diving, etc. Not forgetting the cheering on the team angle: hours of horse jumping if that's your thing. I'm not a fan of wrestling or karate for instance, but if I was I'd struggle to find coverage on the BBC, maybe some on Eurosport.

Interesting discussion here.

---

The Seeds of Disrespect for Racewalking

Lack of respect also likely comes from the top competitors being non-Anglo. Russia, Mexico, Ecuador, and Poland are fielding the best — and thus the sport is bound to get less press as the USA, Canada, and Britain finish out of the medals.

https://www.verywellfit.com/no-respect-for-olympic-racewalking-3435871

---

(Perhaps not accurate for Canada any more).

@SRD, I too seem to remember it in the late 1970s, bit of a craze at the time? Canada took the bronze medal in the men's 50k yesterday.

Race walking further notable for no USA, Russian presence either in addition to no Brits. I suppose no expensive facilities required for this sport, just good shoes and rigorous technique.

This Olympics has piqued my interest in two sports which didn't really notice on television before - triathlon and race walking. Will be seeking them out in future.

@gembo, he did! The Polish chap.

Was trying to figure out the penalties system, seems pretty strict. Not sure I could operate under such conditions but it was quite compelling viewing I must say.

Also refreshing to watch an event where Team GB were nowhere to be seen. Closest we got was an Irish fella who came in among the early finishers, <strike>11th I think</strike> 10th place.

Will try to catch the women's event at some point too. Shorter at just 20km, so might be able to watch the whole thing in one go.

Katie Archibald born in Chertsey so technically English. Brother John born in Edinburgh so Scottish. However if they both identify as/live in Jocko Homo it's all good. Katie a member of City of Edinburgh Racing Club too.

Carlin appears to be solidly a Paisley man.

New velodrome in Glesca will have done the Scottish track specialists a power of good for sure.
