News from our roving reporter @bill is that the road to the Rigg is currently closed for resurfacing. Hooray!
Shame the Tour isn't in the area for the whole week, imagine how good the roads would be.

Not if you are early you can just cycle the route. And join the merry throng. This is what we did from Balerno the last time and ended up top of Redstpne then afterwards went down and then over to Garvald. Was good.

I'd like to position myself somewhere along the route. Maybe starting early from Stow and stopping on the second large climb. Anybody with past experience able to advise how easy this might be, will I be blocked from cycling along these roads the morning of the race?

I wonder how Cav will be feeling by the time they get to Edinburgh. As amir says it's not the hardest day's climbing so but neither is there any particularly flat bits. although I'm not sure that turning to Heriot and going over the Stow climb can be considered easier than continuing up the Granites though.

Looking at the OS map Wanside Rig is the name shown at the junction above the hairpin and as such is closer to the route than where Redstone Rig is shown. Although if they said they were climbing Redstone Rig then I would have expected them to be heading South. I honestly don't recall ever referring to the climb on the approach from the reservoir by anything other than a reference to the reservoir so their name seems to make sense.

The A7 is considerably easier than the old road on the other side. But nearer to acceptable quality of surface and width.

I was going to post something about them only being able to use roads that they can close without inconveniencing anyone... but then I had a look at the route and they are actually using a decent chunk of the A7 and even a little bit of the A68!!! (Admittedly the bit through Lauder.)

They could have picked tougher hills ... Witchy Knowe, Talla (edinburgh87 would be even more annoyed), the south climb from Lauder, Redstone Rigg from the south (though they do have Hungry Snout). Through the Moorfoots they divert from the bigger climb over the Granites by going through Heriot. But looks like a nice day out.

The published route has the hill above Gifford called Wanside Rig (which appears correct) but I thought it was called Redstone Rig. Two names for the same place, or a slightly different place?
