Also, driving over a solid white line must surely ring alarm bells for a professional driver.

The taxi driver ahead also seems unaware they shouldn't be in that lane.

The mandatory cycle lane becomes obvious once you get past the lights as the solid line narrows diagonally into the advisory lane. Bus and taxi drivers should see this if driving along there regularly. I've had bus drivers cut in front of me at the same place but nothing close to a collision.

No reason I can see why the cycle lane protection doesn't extend all the way to the lights however.

Super lazy excuse from the taxi driver there. In image 3, look at where the top of the bollards are relative to the window cill of the taxi - they are lower than it. When you look left from the driver's seat you would find it hard to even see a bollard, let alone miss somebody several feet taller than the bollard who actually is the same height as your window.

In my experience he almost certainly just drove into the lane immediately that he physically could, without bothing to look. The bollards I have to drive past are much more substantial yet you can see people as plain as day.

Looking at the video, the driver was definitely in the wrong there but its a pretty odd short bit of cycle lane as you've had to navigate the chicane first and the bollards end, followed by the solid line and a cycle drawn on the road but if you were looking purely at the bollards I can see how easy it would be to think the lane had ended. That said, he still should have checked the mirrors and seen me.

I'm fine, luckily only brushed me as I'd already slammed on the brakes predicting what he was doing

I had to brake to avoid being hit at the exact same bit two weeks ago. It's obviously bad design by facilitating driver incompetence.

The bit where the collision took place is a mandatory cycle lane and therefore the taxi shouldn't have been in there. It's a solid white line with cycle logo in it.

The buses and taxis shouldn't join that lane until after the lights.

Got hit by a taxi outside Waverley today as the spaces for people on Princes Street ends prior to the pedestrianised Waverley Bridge area and becomes two vehicle lanes (heading West). All ok and to be fair while he should have been looking where he was going before pulling into the left Lane, it’s hard to see the cyclists going straight ahead as the bollards obscure vision. I’d say the council are more at fault than the driver in some ways and the guy was pretty shaken up when I banged on his window and told him.

I’m wondering if when these spaces for people lanes end, we need a give way box where cars must give way to cyclists allowing for the cyclist to move out if needed and avoiding left hook situations when the cyclists are going straight ahead at crossroads (had some close calls in Duddingston with that too).

What happened and my suggestion

Also - what’s the best way to report to the council?
