Edinburgh council by-elections see victories for Labour and Greens, taking seats from SNP

By Ian Swanson Published 4th Sep 2026, 02:55 BST

Results will be analysed for indications of how next year’s council elections could go

“

https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-council-by-elections-see-victories-for-labour-and-greens-taking-seats-from-snp-8959444

As discussed upthread, Lab had an appropriate candidate for Southside

I’m sure there will be people here who will be discussing cycle infrastructure with her…

The problem with by-elections in multi ward seats, is that they are more like FPTP than PR as only one candidate is being elected

Both winners are likely to be reelected next year, but there’s a lot for all Parties to ‘play for’

It could be argued that the SNP were unwise/overoptimistic to call by-elections (though presumably it was primarily up to sitting candidates?) - or perhaps more ‘democratic(?)

Whether all Cllrs should stand down if elected as MSPs or MPs is a valid Q

“
Returning Officer for Edinburgh, Paul Lawrence said:

With these by-elections fast approaching, I encourage residents in these wards to take this opportunity to have their say on Thursday. Please remember your polling cards and check your polling place. These new councillors will represent your communities on issues affecting your local area and Edinburgh as a whole.
Our elections pages provide useful information on how the Single Transferable Vote system works - you can rank candidates in order of preference, choosing as many or few as you’d like.
If you're voting by post, please return your completed ballot as soon as possible to make sure your vote is counted.

True - not as sure about the Innocent but Meadows paths generally fairly good condition?

Sadly unsurprising about the condition of road and Spokes being ignored on it.

"The worst of the travelling safely lanes in terms of how bad the road condition was before they were fitted"

Exactly this point was made, at every possible opportunity, by Spokes during the various Spaces for People/Travelling Safely consultations. Nothing was ever done, of course.

The prospective councillor may also have off-road routes, such as the Innocent path and the Meadows paths, in mind?

Came to say - has anyone heard of the Lib Dem candidate? Ruth Elliot for Labour I think we’ve mentioned here as a prolific ‘content creator’ on Instagram including a whole bunch of videos about cycling in Edinburgh; I have it on good authority they are a former Green which makes more sense to me but I believe may have joined Labour over the issue of Independence.

The Lib Dem ‘cycling campaigner’ though, I’m surprised to have not heard or seen around… quote from interview with the Edinburgh Reporter:

The other thing I think I’d like to do is make sure our active travel routes are fit for purpose. So we have some pretty decent segregated cycle lanes across across Southside Newington.

“I’ve been doing work for years, campaigning for safer streets essentially for pedestrians, for cyclists, for everyone really. and for drivers too. We’ve got some really dangerous junctions – the one at East Mayfield and Dalkeith Road, it’s just unacceptable.

“People are going to get really hurt there. Something absolutely needs to be done about that. But for some reason it’s low priority. I can’t understand why.

“We need to make sure our active travel routes are fit for purpose.

“A lot of the segregated cycle lanes in the ward have not been resurfaced for a long time and often their surfacing is worse than the surfacing on the main road, which is ridiculous because the wear and tear comes from cars, not bikes. It’s just no one’s bothered to go in and do it, so making sure that’s all working would also be a priority.”

Talking sense, except for the bit where they then join up with the Liberal Democrats…

Southside/Newington contenders:

The main contenders are seen as Labour activist Ruth Elliott who has campaigned against Purpose Built Student Accommodation developmemt; cycling campaigner and University of Edinburgh AI researcher Artie Khovanov: and the Greens’ Isabella Gastel Alejandre, who helps run community projects including a permaculture garden and clothes-repair workshops.

Going by the results of the last council elections in 2022, the SNP should hold on to the seat in Portobello/Craigmillar, but the Southside/Newington looks like a contest between Labour and the Greens, with the SNP snapping at their heels.

In case chdot's image doesn't work for anyone else, it's a front page from the Sunday Mail, where the lead story is this: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/ex-council-leader-cammy-day-36435192

"Ex-council leader Cammy Day used fake name to lodge complaint about colleague". The colleague was Ross McKenzie, and the complaint "was ultimately judged to be without substance."

Two former SNP and Labour councillors who quit their own parties to stand as independents have joined the Scottish Greens.

Edinburgh councillor Ross McKenzie and Buckie councillor John Stuart have been unveiled as the latest politicians to join the party

“

The Lib Dems can’t continue to stand on a ticket of delivering better services, win the trust of voters and then refuse to take charge, ostensibly because too many of their councillors have other work commitments. Until now, the Conservative group has grudgingly accepted the situation to keep the SNP and their Green friends out of administration, which after the experience of 2017-22 is understandable.
