I was wearing a fluorescent beanie. We were stopped opposite you for a while at the Lady Lawson Street/West Port junction, but too far away for me to make contact (and anyway you were doing important marshalling activity at that point).</p> <p>Editing to add a thought, having read the blog from Kirsty. I realised only part-way through the ride that it <em>wasn't a coincidence </em>that all the potholes round the route had been sprayed to mark them out. We had an amazing turn out of around 170 people. </p> <p>While the Council has ambitious plans for improving cycling infrastructure, it is important that all councillors understand the strength of feeling and support across Edinburgh on this issue.</p> <p>We’d be grateful if you could write to your ward councillors this week explaining why you went on the ride and or supported it. I have sore shoulders today from wrestling with it.</p> <p>My daughter rightly told me off for saying to her that a teenage girl in front of us, on a bike with the saddle too low, was a novice and unable to ride in a straight line and was therefore causing me problems as I couldn't easily react to her. We’re looking forward to seeing you all.<br /> Please read the ride briefing below. It has been designed to keep everyone safe and comfortable during the event. The route is at the end of the briefing.<br /> Before the ride:<br /> Please make sure your bike is road ready. We’d suggest checking the tyres are pumped up, the brakes are working, and wheels are turning freely.<br /> Please check here before you head off for any unexpected cancellation.<br /> Please wear warm clothes/gloves/socks/shoes. It will be cold and we will be riding slowly. Remember to light up your bike!<br /> Please try and arrive at Middle Meadow Walk around 7.15pm so that we can depart at 7.30pm.<br /> At the ride:<br /> Please stay in between the front and back marshals.<br /> If you are a naturally slow rider, or not confident, please ride towards the front.<br /> Please give each other space during the ride: we are still in a pandemic and you need space to manage potholes, and unexpected slowing or swerving by riders near you.<br /> We need to keep everyone together in a big group for the whole ride. For this to work we will go at a slow pace, especially on uphill sections. Please try not to let any big gaps open as this will create splits, and risks vehicles getting in amongst cyclists. We are much safer together.<br /> Please stay on the left hand side of the road. Do not get in the way of oncoming vehicles.<br /> The front of the ride will obey traffic signals etc, and the whole group will follow on. There will be marshals helping with this at junctions and roundabouts. This is to keep us all safe - it is not to antagonise drivers.<br /> If the front leaders need to slow down or stop they will shout 'slow/stopping'. Please obey these messages and pass the message back through the group. Do the same for right and left turns.<br /> Please be aware of the varying conditions on the road and take extra care on the cobbled section.<br /> If you have a mechanical breakdown or you are feeling unwell, please move off the road onto the pavement if you can. Wave down a marhsal and we will do what we can to offer support. We have a first aider and people with bike mechanic skills on the ride.<br /> If an emergency vehicle comes from behind (blue lights/sirens), please move over to the left and return to the road once the vehicle has gone through. Obey any calls from the marshals.<br /> We will be taking up road space that is not normally taken up by a large group of people on cycles on a Friday night.<br /> Do smile and wave and ring your bells but only if you can do safely while riding as a group. We'll be on our most polite behaviour.<br /> Enjoy the ride!<br /> At the end of the ride:<br /> Given the Covid situation, we will not be going on anywhere for a drink afterwards.
