One of the driest Aprils on record for central and southern England has left river levels below normal, raising fears of drought in some areas over the summer.

The latest UK hydrological survey – which tracks river and groundwater levels – suggests central and southern England and eastern Scotland will experience notably low river flows over the next three months, raising concerns about water shortages if dry weather persists.

Taken together, the three developments will account for more than 1% of the UK’s carbon budget in 2033. This is the equivalent to the emissions of a mid-sized city such as Bristol.

…

All three developments are classed as having a “minor adverse” impact on the UK’s overall climate goals.

However, the Thurrock datacentre will produce more emissions than an international airport, and Elsham Tech Park’s peak emissions will reach 1m tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2033-34 – just short of the 1.2m tonnes of carbon emissions of all the UK’s domestic flights.

Joybuy is owned by China’s JD.com, the giant online and high street retail group which is taking on its US rival Amazon in Britain in a clash that is expected to lead to “collateral damage” for UK retailers caught up in the tussle for shoppers.

In 1996 I worked with the fi5rst automated bike hire systems in Portsmouth and Rotterdam as part of a concept I call TotalMobilily which originall used the ITSO RFID card (bus pass) as a single portal to access bike hire (24/7) new car hire (also 24/7) plus bus trips tram trips, train trips etc

I've already done a personal hack so that my 'Saltire' bus pass unlocks new electric cars, for the few times I need one, it used to hire Nextbikes, & I want to do this with Voi, plus of course it gives me bus trips plus express coaches, and I can also get a 50% discount on local rail fares with Glasgow Subway trips stored on the bus pass and capped at £1.75 per day (2 trips or more)

Ultimately this 2006 video shows how it can develop as a phone app across every mobility option

Edinburgh has almost all elements in place but a few transport dinosaurs need a hefty "Boot in the Glutes" to get this happening

“

Transport remains one of the most oil-dependent parts of the UK economy, accounting for around 80 per cent of final oil consumption.

That leaves everyday mobility directly exposed to global supply shocks. Electric vehicles begin to erode that dependence. By removing the need for petrol and diesel, they would allow drivers to continue using their cars in the immediate aftermath of a disruption, without competing for limited fuel supplies.

People are changing the way they consume "social media" and not really doing much genuinely social activity, or posting, any more. Instead, they are consuming videos and content made by other (semi-)professional people or by other people they don't even know... Doom-scrolling, if you like...

So what does that mean "social media" is now? Well, basically advertising. The whole thing is now just advertising!

If we went back in time, and spoke to people in say the 1980s, and told them we were spending 4 to 8 hours a day looking at advertising, what would they think?

They'd think we'd gone bonkers - and they'd be right!

Last year, around 1.5% of the world’s electricity was used to power data centres. Now data centres are not just AI: they’re facilities that contain the servers and IT infrastructure behind all of our digital services.

That’s everything from Substack and the rest of the internet, to Netflix streaming, Google Maps, online banking, and messaging friends.

AI data centres are dedicated facilities for running AI models. The distinction between the two is not always that clean-cut, but the chart below shows the breakdown.

The process of relocating people from New Orleans should start immediately as the city has reached a “point of no return” that will see it surrounded by the ocean within decades due to the climate crisis, a stark new study has concluded.

…

“While climate mitigation should remain the first step to prevent the worst outcomes, coastal Louisiana has evidently already crossed the point of no return,” added the perspectives paper, published in the Nature Sustainability journal. A perspectives paper is a scholarly article that provides an assessment, rather than new data.

Chandra’s dealings with six major technology companies – Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, Apple and Meta – took place as the government developed policies to secure investment from Silicon Valley, including multimillion-pound energy subsidies and preferential planning approval for datacentres in what ministers have called AI growth zones.

…

The government believes promises by US tech firms to invest £150bn will turbocharge the UK economy. The Guardian found last month that many of the deals were “phantom investments”, with existing datacentres presented as new builds and a site earmarked for a supercomputer left undeveloped. OpenAI paused a multibillion-pound plan for a North Tyneside datacentre last month, blaming energy costs and regulation.

A gulf of more than three decades in healthy life expectancy separates Scotland’s most and least affluent neighbourhoods, according to a new research, seen by The Herald, that lays bare the scale of inequality across the country.

Data compiled in The Index of Scottish Life Expectancy (THISLE) has found that people in the poorest areas can expect to live over 30 years fewer in good health than those in the wealthiest communities.

Though solar was initially incorrectly blamed for crisis, renewables have helped insulate Spain from gas price rises caused by war in Middle East

One year ago today, all of Spain, and much of Portugal, suffered through a blackout of unprecedented scale and duration. In mere seconds, a cascading sequence of events burst through the grid and created Europe’s first “system black” event in recent memory.

Of the many clashes in worldview between King Charles III and Donald Trump, the greatest is on an issue the White House has sought to silence: the future of the planet.

For more than 50 years, as the Prince of Wales, the environmentally minded Charles spoke out often, addressing UN summits and closed gatherings alike, to urge better guardianship of nature and strong action on the climate.

The royal visit to Washington will be no exception. The Guardian understands the king will not be silent on green issues, despite concerns within the British government, and sources say the king is likely to touch on the environment in public as well as private. Civil society groups have been in touch with the palace over the potential inclusion of references to the climate and nature in the king’s speech to Congress on Tuesday afternoon.

“

Governments have done too little to address a rising burden of often avoidable illness, she said. “Successive governments, including the current one, have known this but failed to take the action needed. Turning the tide requires a new approach that goes far beyond patching up the NHS to tackling the root causes of poor health,” she said.

Ministers should force food firms to make their products healthier, introduce minimum unit pricing of alcohol in England, as Scotland has done, and tackle drug-related harm, Dixon urged.

The UK has deep and widening inequalities in healthy life expectancy. It is highest in wealthy Richmond upon Thames, London, where the average man enjoys 69.3 years and average woman 70.3 years in good health. However, in contrast, an average man in Blackpool gets just 50.9 years and the average woman in Hartlepool only 51.2 years.

Labour’s manifesto pledged that it would “tackle the social determinants of health, halving the gap in healthy life expectancy between the richest and poorest regions in England”.

“

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/apr/27/people-in-uk-spend-fewer-years-in-good-health-than-a-decade-ago-study-finds

Well ‘cycling’ isn’t the answer, but encouraging/facilitating should be more important/easier than currently…
