The equally simplistic way that I see it is that there is a certain limit (financial or physical) to the ammount of "stuff" I can buy. By opening new places to buy it I don't actually buy more "stuff", I just buy it elsewhere. So unless these new places can either somehow make me spend more money on buying food I don't need or unless they are inherintly inneficient and need more staff than the alternative locations, then all they are doing is displacing where I buy my "stuff" - from shop A to supermarket B.
