Thanks to @bill too!

Longstone Road is still closed (just by the Longstone Inn). I had no problems walking through.

@Arellcat - Excellent, thank you. I have cycled across the roundabout before, but only late at night when it's been quiet.

If you have any useful advice for cycle parking when I reach SH, that'd be appreciated too.

@Frenchy, the roundabout is horrible but that shouldn't stop you. I have cycled across and around it literally thousands of times and, anecdotally, I've had very few actual instances of harm coming to me. There are some important vehicular cycling aspects to this roundabout, when travelling from Longstone Road to Saughton Road, because it's large, it's often busy, there are some poor sightlines and the geometry is not circular.

Use the left-hand lane on approach, adopt strong primary position.

Right-hand shoulder check once on the roundabout, to look for drivers attempting to overtake and for A71 westbound; and drivers approaching on the roundabout who will take the A71.

Signal right as soon as you are on the roundabout and while shoulder checking, if there are drivers to your right.

Watch traffic on A71 eastbound closely; the hedge and the road sign both reduce your sightlines. Go super-primary – almost to the white line – as soon as you can to make sure you can see vehicles as soon as possible, and they you.

Signal left when you reach the hedge.

Right-hand shoulder check.

Watch the drivers to your left closely, especially those in the left-hand lane who may turn left or go straight on.

Once past them you can stop signalling.

Quick right-hand shoulder check before exiting onto Saughton Road to check for overtakes.

You have to do all of this in about six to eight seconds.

The underpasses are ok, but do watch for people when you negotiate the right-angled turns at the bottom of the ramps.

@Frenchy Just so that you know Longstone Rd was closed off by the police this morning with 'fire' tapes across but they let me walk through. It may be all clear by the time you are through.

So I need to go to somewhere near this roundabout later today. I'll be coming from the south east, and was planning on going along Longstone Road, then using the underpasses to cross Calder Road and get to Saughton Road.

Is there a better route I should be looking at?

The incident occurred on Calder Road at the Longstone Road Roundabout, at around 7am this morning, on Wednesday, February 9

The cyclist has been taken to the RIE

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

The road is currently open, but drivers have been advised to avoid the area, as there are long queues on all approaches
