The FOI response that the Express/Tory story is based on is as follows:

“The answers to your questions are as follows:

1. As of the date of your request, 988 bikes had been provided to children through the pilot schemes.

2. The breakdown of bikes distributed in each local authority has been attached for ease. Some local authorities fall under pilots which are not issuing individual bikes but are providing bike fleets to local schools for training opportunities, and are operating bike libraries for children to borrow or loan a bike.

3. The commitment to provide free bikes to school age children who cannot afford them was a 2021 SNP manifesto commitment and to be rolled out before the end of the parliamentary term in 2026. The current pilots will end in August 2022 and a National Rollout will be developed from the output of these pilots.

4. As of the date of your request, a total of £935,797.56 had been spent on the pilots.”

https://www.gov.scot/publications/foi-202200272953/

Which explains why zero bikes for Edinburgh, Fife and many other authorities appear on the list. There is more going on with the money than pure bike purchase/gifting.

Nicola Sturgeon’s flagship scheme to give free bikes to Scotland’s poorest children has “missed the mark” with less than 1,000 vehicles distributed.

I wonder what Birmingham's scheme, for adults, has cost?

& who the 'existing organisations' were?

Were these new bikes? Bulk ordered?

Costs do seem high

Yes, ‘costs’ seem high/questionable, but Express didn’t even bother to examine that.

@chdot - agreed, but there is a kernel of a real story in there. 988 bike were delivered at a total cost of £935,797, with an average cost per bike of between £300 - £500. Assuming an average of £400 per bike (total £395,200) then £540,597 was spent on something else (administration?). That is 58% of the total scheme cost.

I appreciate any scheme has start-up costs, but this programme was actually delivered by existing organisations, many of them voluntary groups. I don't think it unreasonable to ask what is going on, even though the mix of the Express and Tories is rather hard to stomach.

He was a nice fellow and very pro cycling when the local Balerno Cares goes all ranty about bike lanes or ignorant cyclists on the WoL path.

He made no mention of Lesley. I get the feeling she is an outlier.

He did mention Adam McVey, he does cycle I am told.

He uses the excellent Lanark road bike lanes on the way down but does not come back up the hill but I never got his route home , maybe Colinton or maybe canal. Not WoL path he doesn’t like it. Maybe he is on here and we will meet again at PoP

Maybe fair locally given the opposition/opportunism of other CEC party groups? Maybe fairer still to say Lesley MacInnes supports cycling, while the rest of her party are lukewarm at best.

Said to me by nice fellow cyclist staffing the SNP stall at Balerno Farmer’s Market.

I said you sure it isn’t The Greens. Don’t the SNP support building roads for drivers?

Nope defintely the SNP, the LEX, the active travel, the promotion of cycle lanes, all SNP

This has fair cheered me up
