Not sure about gravel (is that the settled term??)

Fat Continental Ride Tours are nice and comfy on hard surfaces, but react to loose stuff as they might to large ball bearings!

Gravel bike @chdot ?
Steel frame and big tyres will be ideal for Five Coastal path.

Think I might get a Shand. Wonder if they can do a copy of an M5 high racer? Know someone working for them has restored an old recliner.

@ steveo

Ha, I had to ram a book right up where the sun don’t shine and Mrs Garto took the measurements. Shand then came back and said I was a perfect medium.

I had this years ago when I went to Ede and Ravenscroft and asked for a made to measure shirt, they took the measurement s and said I was an exact 15

It is not easy for me to accept I am standard.

I'd love a nice custom bike. My cdf is coming up for 8 years old so maybe I'm not quite as hashy with bikes as I used to be.

I cracked recently, due to various reasons and bought a Shand Slinkymalinky frame in Pigeon Blue or as I say Cushy Doo Blue.

Iwrats is kindly building it for me.

It is a thing of great beauty.

I've been half looking for a Raleigh 405 Ti (titanium frame).
Was my first adult road bike bought from MacDonald cycles.

I kept it for 15 years and always regretted giving it *away, it was handbuilt by Jeff (don't know why I remember that).

I'd really like to make a fixed gear from one.

*I took it back to MacDonald cycles for a warranty claim after 14 years and 9 months because of a broken downtube gear leaver mount. Raleigh couldn't give me a replacement, so the shop gave me £500 off a Giant bike which seemed ammicable. They offered the frame back and I told them to bin it.

If no cantilevers, should be able to get deep drop dual-pivots to fit.

Likely to be MUCH better braking than ‘period’ brakes!

“can use the same cantis?”

Yes IF there is sufficient adjustment - either with sliding slots or angling of brake blocks (normally the stud fitting type).

Depends to some extent on the rim depth and width, and also exactly where the cantilever bosses have been brazed.

Also can put 700c wheels on 27” frames. As well as giving you a much better choice of rims, it also means room for bigger/fatter tyres (27” tyres are generally 32 wide).

Great for older quality touring bikes (eg 531 frames).

“That is a nice looking bike”

Yes, better shade of red than previous 2 years. PLUS looks ‘right’ because of bigger wheels/tyres - SO much clearance.

Now comfortable cafe cruiser!

May appear at PoP.

I was eyeing a pretty mint GT Zaskar on eBay a few weeks ago one of those bikes that teenage mtb me really really wanted.

I'd be interested to see how it rides compared to a more modern mtb.

Are 26" and 650b so close in size you can use the same cantis? I did not know that. That is a nice looking bike.

In these days of trouble and uncertainty, I thought someone might like to see a relic from past times -

Click for big

Was almost original apart from the wheels, which I’ve replaced with 650B.

This is a genuine classic from the days of slack angles and looong wheelbases!

(Yes the chain’s too short. Other modifications to come.)
