HOW HAS THIS HAPPENED??

It seems to be a product of society (for which read the media and politicians) deciding that the public is too dumb or not interested enough to understand nuance, and then exploiting that to stir things up.

Off your original topic.

Somehow the whole ‘you can’t restrict car use (in towns)’ has been using the ‘but what about rural areas?’ argument.

JUST LIKE ‘wot about the disabled’?

HOW HAS THIS HAPPENED??

There's a whole other discussion point about the differences between rural/suburban/urban travel perceptions.

Having grown up in the country, we felt away from it all (as kids) but with a car the 3 mile drive to a small town could be done in 6 minutes and is fairly comparable to my suburban journeys to the local High Street.

The bigger town was 12 miles away, so 20minutes drive if we wanted a cinema or larger shop. Again not that different to the travel time to a multiplex or city centre.

The big difference though is if you don't have a car as the suburban journeys can be done in similar time by bike as by car so they are accessible for those without a car (e.g. kids) whereas in the country they took a lot longer and public transport was non- existent.

The time spent transporting would be interesting too. For instance I imagine rural families travel more/further but don't necessarily spend longer doing it than an urban family.

Here's something to muse on this May Day...

You know how there are studies that tell you the cost of raising a child from birth to adulthood and everyone is shocked by the cost.

I wonder if there has been any studies of the transportation mileage that a parent will do to ferry their child to the various activities, appointments, parties and school...

Obviously it will vary by family but I'm wondering what scale it would be and how it would be spread across modes of transport.
