It's not really that long a detour* to cross at the toucan crossing by the skate park and then take the WoL path to get to Baird Drive (although I suppose it depends to a degree on where you are starting from in Saughton Park). There's another toucan crossing at the west end of Baird Drive to get you across Balgreen Road and on to the cycle path that runs along the side of the golf course. All off road/protected crossings and stress-free - except perhaps that that section of the WoL path is a bit on the narrow side and might not be ideal for a large group of cyclists (think: encounters with pedestrians and dog-walkers).

I wasn't aware that there had ever been any segregation on Balgreen Road - shows you how much I prefer to avoid it...

* EDIT: OK, it's half a mile from the skate park rather than less than a quarter of a mile if you just follow the road, but it's still only a third of a mile longer - hardly a punishing additional distance on a bike, on the flat.

Thanks - I think it will mostly be fairly experienced cyclists, but aiming for an enjoyable ride.

If there are novices/less confident cyclists then that stretch of Balgreen Road is nasty: need to cross over the left-turn filter lane beside the park then the road narrows under the bridge.

Thanks Stickman. organising a cycle route for our work away day at the Zoo.

I think we'll manage but thought there might have been some bollards there.

No, no protection on the road. If you absolutely must avoid the road then could do a huge detour along the WoL and Baird Drive.

Specifically the section between Saughton Park and the Tram path?

Thanks!
