That article contains my new favourite ever EEN comment from a concerned local resident:

"It is little wonder that many people in the Braid Road area are so confused and cynical about the way our streets have been tinkered with by politicians and officials out to prove a point or save the planet with no regard for local wishes.”

I hope the EEN follows this up, as I am keen to hear more from these Braid Road residents who are opposed to saving the planet.

But some residents have complained there was nothing about it on the council’s consultation hub or on council news pages, and no mention on Twitter or Facebook until two days before the deadline for comments on July 3. They also said people who managed to find the consultation on the website of the company carrying it out for the council felt the way it was presented was “inaccessible”.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said:

@chdot: Tried to look at actual proposals for ETROs but way it's set out extremely challenging to find particular places & feels intentionally designed to be unusable

I completely agree with Franca: the "notes" on a lot of the ETROs were unhelpful at best, with many symbols on the diagrams left unexplained, and confusing and/or apparently contradictory at worst. They seemed particularly bad/unclear/deliberately evasive at pointing out what existing SfP infrastructure was planned to be removed.

I found myself unable to offer any support for the ETROs nearest to me. On Braid Road past the Hermitage all physical separation appears to be removed and replaced by paint which as we all know is 100% pointless. As far as I can tell, the northbound lane on Comiston Road is severely compromised by the lifting of parking restrictions in certain places for no apparent reason other than shameless pandering to fossil-fuel age attitudes.

I am quite glad that Spokes and SW20 managed to submit coherent and clearly expressed responses. I'm afraid all my attempts to come up with non-offensive words to express my opinions quickly came to nought.

Yeah I don't get it, if they claim they want to take all the ETROs forward, and the ETRO process includes consultation, why are they soliciting comments now? A cynic might suspect they don't actually want to progress the ETROs at all, and are hoping they get a big enough flurry of angry emails to give them the cover they need to "go back to the drawing board"(ie, scrap it all).

Also, I hope that website isn't going to be where the actual statutory consultations take place:

How do I participate?

You can always browse public projects, but you’ll need to sign up in order to take an action. This helps to maintain a community feel and ensure the legitimacy of the input.

What information can people see about me?

Your name, photo and bio, if you’ve added one, are visible. You can always change these in your Settings.

I don't much fancy the idea of having my photo and personal information publicly attached to any comments I make, given the threats and intimidation supporters of active travel measures have received elsewhere. Again a cynic might conclude discouraging participation is the whole point.

Chance to show that ‘the cycle lobby’ is more organised than the randoms who don’t like restrictions to their freedoms?

The consultations for Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders that will keep most of the existing Spaces for People infrastructure in place for the next 18 months are now open. They are not very easy to find. All the plans and documentation is available at:

https://pclengagement-hub.co.uk/en-GB/folders/travelling-safely

There is no online survey. Comments must be submitted by email to:

Edinburgh.Consultation@projectcentre.co.uk

This really matters as it includes CCE favourites like the Lanark Road lanes, Comiston Road and the Fairmilehead-Meadows LTN.

Comments must be submitted by 3 July 2022. This isn't a statutory consultation. That will take place over the first six months of the schemes being implemented (if that actually happens). Still worth commenting though, as without evidence of support the proposals could well be dropped by the new administration. I reckon it only takes a couple of lines saying you strongly support the proposals. No need to go into detail, unless you feel really strongly about something.
