Looks like the new designs will make it an easy case to argue…

I wonder how many of those ideas where suggested by Spokes, and others, before the first rails were laid?

Some good news, although it obviously too late for your wife, is that there’s a new design going in there in September which will make the track crossing much safer. Designs here: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/tram-route-cycle-safety-improvements/supporting_documents/Tram%20Cycle%20Safety%20Phase%203%20Consultation%20Drawing.pdf

What it seems to need is a slightly narrower pavement and a protected route to angle cyclists appropriately to cross the tracks. Looking at some of the FOI requests for maps of tram line accidents and it seems to be a hotspot. Think we are going to pursue through British Cycling legal cover as they use Digby Brown who were excellent when I was hit by a car cycling a few years ago. Will definitely also be reporting through other channels once we’ve checked with their advice.

“Very poor design for crossing fully at right angles there.”

Indeed.

Fortunately I rarely go there.

I do a wide, slow, swing to left.

BUT

The ability to do this without a high level of fear depends on what following traffic might do.

Don’t think I’ve done it in the wet.

Hope she gets better soon - physically and mentally.

Thanks folks. She is out the hospital now. Lots of bruises, face stitched up, possible concussion and a suspected broken hand with an CT and orthopaedic referral.

The garmin incident detection worked well and it’s given us a log. Was as she was going East along Princes St and the tram lines curve to the left up to St Andrew’s Sq. Very poor design for crossing fully at right angles there. See

http://www.spokes.org.uk/documents/public-transport/tram/

ll crashes or other incidents relating to tramlines should be reported to City of Edinburgh Council who are keeping a record and using this to try and identify problems which need addressed. Report by email to trams@edinburgh.gov.uk or write to Tram Depot, 1 Myreton Drive, Edinburgh. There is no longer a phone number for reports as the Council wants them in writing.

Please also copy the report of your crash to Spokes and to the Council Active Travel Team. If you are emailing your report as above, you can cc spokes@spokes.org.uk and activetravel@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Please report such incidents even if they were in the past and you have only just discovered this reporting method, and even if you have already notified the police or anyone else. These contacts can also be used for any queries about the tram or tramlines.

If you are considering making a claim for damages – Spokes has prepared an information sheet on claiming for a tramline-related incident: http://www.spokes.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1908-Tramline-crash-claiming-v7.pdf

My wife had a nasty head injury after a tram line caught her wheel and she went over the handlebars. Bike seems to be bent out of shape too.

If anyone witnessed it, let us know. Would also like to hear your experiences claiming against the council for this.
