Launching this Wednesday (November 5), the service will initially run three return journeys per day, seven days a week. And from November 26, this will increase to six return trips daily, linking George Street, Haymarket, and Corstorphine directly with Lost Shore Surf Resort at Ratho.

There was a path on the 'other' side of the canal which came out just south of the canal bridge at the EICA. I used it on occasion but I believe the access to it from a path down the side of Hallcroft Park has been blocked by the building work. It dropped very steeply to the canal side before climbing back up to the EICA access road. Shame they couldn't have done something with that. You can just see the path above the stored containers in this screenshot.

...the access ramp is too steep to qualify for funding from active travel charity Sustrans.
It is taxpayer money, distributed via Sustrans. If Sustrans are the problem then there are other routes to get the cash to the Council. Also, after donkeys years of building absolute #### Sustrans now choose to get sniffy!

...the city council faced having to pay Scottish Canals to lease the air above the canal, costing at least £821,000 over a 50-year term.
Scottish Canals are owned by Scottish Ministers. Is it right that their demand for cash is preventing a development which supports Scottish Government policy? Especially as the cash is from another public body? It makes no sense.

It was also unclear who would have legal responsibility for maintenance of the new bridge
Then clarify it! It's either the Council or Scottish Canals, or the Council and Scottish Canals. Seems relatively straightforward.

If they won't build a footbridge, that only leaves one option - appropriate as much of the existing road bridge as needed for footway/cycleway and connect up the pavement either side of it to the Wave Garden and Climbing Arena

https://maps.app.goo.gl/4wnhrSTMUx7a9mnUA

With potential for an adequately graded path down to the towpath here:

£821,000 over 50 years is £16,420 per annum. (And far less than that in real terms, e.g. £16k in 20 years time will be worth around £8k in today's money.)

Hardly a significant outlay to the council. Perhaps they are just abandonning on "principle" of not paying Scottish Canals? Although principles like that don't seem to apply when it comes to motoring, or other matters... double standards

It's just ("just") an incentives problem. I don't think there can be many politicians who actively don't believe science so much as they just have a strong incentive not to act. Look at, for example, taking all the space on Morrison St that could have been segregated cycle routes between CCWEL and the big offices. All so that vehicles which don't comply with LEZ (10+ year old vehicles) get a shortcut.

You could well ask, ok, why does Scott Arthur not act as if he believes in the science. But it's sadly futile.

They could still build the access to the towpath without a bridge, if they are going to value engineer anything.

It feels weird that Sustrans will fund cosmetic upgrades in the city centre but not level access to the canal because it's not quite level enough.

We've been driving the kids to Ratho for holiday club. It's only a 30 minute cycle but I can't sell either leaving the bike locked to itself on the towpath or venturing on some gravel expedition.

The proposed bridge, together with a new path, was hailed as a “much-needed active travel link” when the plans first emerged in 2019. But although a design has now been completed, the access ramp is too steep to qualify for funding from active travel charity Sustrans.

The press advertorial's seem designed to push people towards buying vouchers which may or may not be worthless the next time the project is delays?

Anyone want to pay £100 for the possibility of a one night stay in their glamping pods sometime over next winter? Me neither.

The Scottish coast is 18,000km long - yet our climate emergency declaring authorities think it appropriate to approve a site where the waves are man-made.

The fact it can't be reached by public transport, contrary to pretty much every planning and transport policy is simply the chef's kiss. I particularly like that the developer convinced the council it could be accessed by modes other than car, and they didn't seem to question it.

Also, there's the fact it is really a holiday park with the wave thing attached as a way of getting planning permission for a large-scale development in designated countryside.

I wonder where the "world's first inland...surfing resort" tag came from? If it was Wavegarden then maybe someone should point out to them that they list one on their web site that's in Switzerland!!!. Even with my limited grasp of geography I reckon that's a fair distance from the sea. (There's another one in Melbourne that's ten miles from the port, and one near Bristol that's 2½ miles from the nearest stretch of coastline. I would tentatively suggest that at least one of those locations might also struggle to qualify as "not inland".)

Would it be cynical to suggest an imminent further cash requirement from ‘investors’? Still, the greater fools of the SNIB will probably stump up as many readies as required

I have done this - documented a bit here:

if you go over the bridge at Ratho you can get round the back route as I attempted to show there - it's all open - indeed here is a video:

I reckon it would be possible to guerilla in a section of single-track to bypass the steps. Sure, it wouldn't be Equality Act compliant, but it would help a lot of users. And likely the council would eventually adopt it, as happened on the Water of Leith path at the bridge near Redhall.

So who's up for a spot of guerilla path making?

I can confirm that the route highlighted in red by @abeardwalks is possible if a little gravelly with some steepish sections. Wouldn't recommend on tyres narrower than 32mm, anything else should be alright. There isn't a gate. It is fairly typical crap UK active travel infra though, with some battery-powered motion-sensing lights for lighting!

On navigation, on approach to the centre, it's important to "keep right" and do the dog-leg into the car park (otherwise you end up at the top of some steps, as we found out)

Dog-leg

I suspect the track is at least partly privately-owned, so getting it surfaced seems unlikely to happen.

If you can lift your bike, I'd strongly recommend the direct steps from the canal, as this is much quicker
