Cycled up WOL path from the canal on Friday evening to find the path blocked off at Waulkmill Loan. Cycled up from Colinton today and the path is no longer blocked - don't know if it's officially open, or if someone had just moved the fencing. So in theory - now complete and rideable for the full length.

The thread from the sh1t show on Lanark Road has drifted into the WoL Path resurfacing thread?

Barriers around knockillbraehead were half hearted tonight so I chance it up

Looks finished

But HERAS closing tunnel at west end. I told the dog Walker he might be able to squeeze through as I trundled back down to knockillbraehead with my mighty Brae Panniers and back up to the sh1tshow that is Lanark Road.

We cycled in to the festival the other day with the kids and encountered the Lanark road lack of cycle lanes. Agreed with my better half that we won't take the kids down there any more after the number of close shaves.

Yes, just encountered that. Lanark Rd “cycle lane” is now a car park again most of the way up. I have criminally cycled up the footpath obviously giving way to any pedestrians but ready with my answers if the police stop me.

There's a section closed just east of Spylaw Park currently.

As I discovered today when I tried to ride from the canal to Colinton and beyond: the walkway is closed southbound from GR NT214693 as far as Colinton Station - about ¼ mile in total. The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be any straightforward way past it.

I tried going over the Kate's Mill bridge, then back over the river again to the path that takes you to the steps up to Dell Road but that was comprehensively Heras'ed off as well at GR NT215693. Going the other way at Kate's Mill means a long detour via Katesmill Road, Patie's Road and Colinton Road, then through Colinton village before you can drop back down to the walkway at Colinton Station via the somewhat perilous right turn at the bottom of Gillespie Road, and continue southbound from there. Total detour, including backtracking from the closure on the walkway, would be about 2 miles (and no signage provided to assist with route finding, as far as I could see).

I ended up backtracking on the walkway as far as Knockillbraehead, which took me out on to Lanark Road (still devoid of DYLs and wands, grrrr) from which point you can dodge in and out of the bike lane avoiding parked cars until you reach Spylaw Avenue, from where you can snick through to Gillespie Road eastbound and a much less dodgy left turn to regain the walkway at Colinton Station. Total detour, including backtracking from the closure on the walkway, about 1½ miles (and again no signage as far as I could see).

There was another almost-but-not-quite-blockage under the bypass, where a party of workies surrounded by Heras was laying some final bits of tarmac. The fellow I spoke to was happy for folks to slip past outside the fencing, and reckoned they'd be done in the day. So a pretty minor disruption, in the overall scheme of things.

Currently all open, though think some locals have moved the fence as there is a stretch west of Waulkmill Loan still to have the tar.

The ramp access near Kingfisher Estate is still closed. At the bottom an iron chicane is in place quite nice and wide enough.

So much HERAS though it was like finishing a stage of the Tour de France.

The one-hole golf course is still there, isn't it? I'm pretty sure I caught a glimpse of it by peering over the hedge last time I went past, and it's still showing on Google Maps satellite view.

I did a rainy day ride home along the WoL on Tuesday evening. Pleasingly, despite the very heavy rain, there was not a single puddle on the new surface between Lanark Road and Currie.

The odd bits that are still unsurfaced, mainly before the tunnel, were still rubbish.

The fake closure has been dismantled. Last night I went up to just before Kinauld new brick house village and took steps up the road through blinkbonny and back down Kirk brae and back onto path at the engine shed/international design centre/actually just a nice big house now after Currie Kirk and continued on my merrie way. Chuckies get a bit big again at Balerno but the road roller has been out.

A dog walker I was speaking to managed to get round the barriers in the (very dry) drainage ditch but I didn't fancy wrestling the bike through them and over the feet of the heras fences.

All possible diversions will involve a flight of steps and/or nettles.

There is a wee barrier saying path closed

The boys who told me Dunno did also appear later on having circumnavigated the HERAS

Then ironically some pranksters have set up a fake HERAS detour with stuff the actual organizers have left lying around.

All possible diversions will involve a flight of steps and/or nettles.

Even on my nettle path I stopped and got out of the way of a couple of kids on bikes and their mums behind them. The shut path is being well used but for non locals I would aim for his Mattness at Juni Green just now. Cafes etc abound canal back via Barberton?

@steveo yes I think I know where you went wrong as I went up the same steps at Kinauld and also came across the further closed bit. I asked some lads if it was really closed they said Dunno. I then went up a wee path maybe even the start of the poets Glen but then immediately turned west over a wee bridge which after some pushing and nettles and lifting bike ended on a wee path that I felt would return me to the WoL path and just about got there when some piled up HERAS stopped me getting back on to path. I retraced my steps maybe fifty yards and met my pal Stu also on same route we pushed down onto path and was all plain sailing to Balerno, path has no asjplhalt yet but has been prepped. Gonna be great and finished in a few weeks bumpy the look except my e the wee bit at Colinton which when they close has no possible diversions, I am a bit tingly from nettle stings is my only issue.

I got properly lost this evening. Going out there is a random bit of fence just after the path from Lanark Road which I ignored. Got to the Kinauld section assumed more of the same and ended up stuck in the estate. After a going up a set of steps back on to the WOL path it turned out there was a second closed section. I gave up and went the road to Currie kirk.

Coming back I came off at Currie kirk and tried to rejoin the path at Blinkbonny road. Instead of going into teh estate I ended up following the road and then a path through to Woodhall. Eventually got back to the WOL path at Colinton!

Took a trip up the closed sections beyond Kinauld Mill Village

Required going up onto country footpath, some stingin nettles then back down

Definitely coming down from Balerno to meet the Kinauld section

Also steps near me being turned into ramp access Bit steep

Nota Bene beyond Colinton towards town some lads or vigilantes have used the HERAS that has just been left around to form a fake closure, you can get round it, totally fake.

I'm quite looking forward to getting the kids on there with the scooters and roller skates. I've only tried it once lower down and thought it was strangely lumpy considering it's now a two year, 2nd attempt project. It's like the surface is sound, but not properly levelled

I went up on Monday for the first time in months. Thats a great surface just irritating that they wasted the money doing the work last year with a surface that everyone told them wouldn't last the winter.

I guess it'll be similar to the NEPN. Early enough in the day before there's a lot of dog walkers about it'll likely be a route of choice. However when it's busy or covered in leaves less so.
