Sorry I wasn't able to call in last Saturday as I'd hoped. Happened to be heading towards the Pleasance area this pm so dropped Cycle Service an e-mail beforehand to ask if they had any dutch ding-dong bells, as a result of which Hannah very kindly sold me a slightly shop-worn but otherwise new one for a tenner.

Many thanks for your helpful suggestions on where to seek the fabled dutch bell.

I managed to track down the thread I remembered reading before: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=13005

I'm still trying to track down a supplier of dutch/ding dong type bells in Edinburgh. No dice at the Bicycle Works, or EBC (though I did have a cheerful conversation with one of the staff about the rarity of hearing Neil Young as background music in a retail environment).

I seem to recall Crane bells being recommended.
If you google "bicycle bell review" (because you know the brand was a bird of some kind, I tried Swan and Stork before remembering Crane) you will get some review articles.

Mr fimm has a Knog Oi on one of his bikes, I think the road bike, if you are looking for something a bit different.

@LaidBack: Thanks for those suggestions. I may swing by your shop later today to have a look at the bells you have available - if you're going to be open?

Have couple of large Dutch style 'ding dong' bells for sale - chrome, brass, black. Extras for UA ones that malfunction by self-ringing on rough surfaces.

Cycle Service had painted ones. Bike Works plainer. Harts no doubt will have Dutch ones too.

I have a couple of good bells. I'd have to check what they are, both being presents. One fits the bars, the other replaces a headset space. One is black anodinised, the other brass. Main advice now is avoid brass. Impossible to keep shiny, unless you like frequent brasso application

I recall some while back a fairly lengthy thread about bells, especially ones with a nice, sonorous tone. Blowed* if I can track it down now, though, so I'm reviving the topic to ask if folks would be able to recommend a bell that:

Would fit on handlebars between 22mm and 32mm diameter;

Alternatively, be available with a headset spacer type fitting;

Be ear-catching enough to attract the attention of pedestrians, without being annoyingly loud or otherwise be likely to offend or surpise;

If possible, not be a single ping.

Regarding that last point: my current bell, though a trifle weedy in tone, does have a double ping, with a push-and-release action, similar to a traditional 'ting-a-ling' bell. I find it easier to use, and it certainly seems to attract attention better than the cheaper, feeble single ping bells that typically have a fairly ramshackle pinger arrangement that always appears to be on the verge of 'pinging' off into the undergrowth never to be seen again. Oddly, though, the double ping seems to work best for attracting attention if I damp the second "ping" a fraction of a second after it sounds, rather than letting it ring out. Go figure.

* Although blowing would imply a horn rather than a bell, of course...
