I was also thinking buying a bike might be cheaper, but ca=n imagine the logistics might be a bit challenging if flying in and out on a tight schedule.

not just finding a bike that fits, but also one that's compatible with your gear, shoes etc (suppose I would bring pedals if required).

although, if the bike shop would buy it back, that would make everything easier.

“I think chdot's advice of buying a bike is good.”

Apart from being cheaper if hire is for many days, bike could be sold for similar price if bought s/h or if new, ‘loss’ from bought price likely to be less than a week or so’s hire.

I think chdot's advice of buying a bike is good. Bike hire options are very limited and charges are in the region of £40+ a day. Anything more than a few days and you could probably pick up a half decent second hand bike for the same price, or less.

If they aren't cycling all the way, then there is the bargain option of Brompton bike hire (see https://bromptonhire.com/) there is a dock at Oban railway station - hire is just £5 a day, although best to sign up before as the process takes a little while and you need access to an official ID. The bikes are good - I've done a 50 mile trip on one and it was fine.

Really worth booking accommodation in advance as options are pretty limited - even camp sites.

As long as the Canadians are fit then should be fine. Accommodation needs booked in advance as limited. Camping is possible but if weather closes in and it will given the trip is likely to take a week? Good to have some indoor beds at some strategic points eg beginning middle end.

The outer Hebrides are stunningly beautiful and quite empty. Some camper vans obviously, The Atlantic is fierce and the next place west is probably Canada.

Cycle all way?

Most of the time?

Probably better to buy a bike.

Some friends from Canada (in their 60s-70s) are planning a trip to Scotland in May-June. At least one of them is hoping to rent a bike. The others are bringing theirs.

Starting in Glasgow - Oban - Barra - Lewis - Tarbert - Skye - back to Glasgow.

Suggestions for possible bike hire? Advice more generally on camping and other accommodation?
