Chatted to the guys that are now trying to put it right, was pretty scathing if not laughing, but said go look see the hole through you can see the road below. Sadly there's heras fences up now probably to save embarrassment.

...it now turned out CityFinbre did not have the required permission to be carrying out the work on the bridge in the first place. “It wasn't part of the works authorised by the council,” he said.

Why does this not surprise me? CityFibre's rather cavalier attitude on and around its work sites always gave me a bit of an impression of ten-gallon hat wearers.

With Ashley Terrace remaining closed for the foreseeable, that means that whenever the developers of the site at the bottom of Craiglockhart Avenue decide to whack in SALT & TTLs - which seems to have been roughly fortnightly for most of the duration of the (still ongoing) construction work - traffic destined from the Slateford/Lanark Road corridor on to Colinton Road, and vice versa, tends to self-divert via Harrison Road or through Colinton Village. Throw in peak time delays on the bypass and "mayhem" (or whatever the tabloids' favourite term is) tends to ensue.

(As it does actually outline in the article, to be fair.)

From David Key - Brompton riding councillor

Update on the traffic issues locally from Council officers:

Council teams continue to work with Glenevin Construction to find a safe and expeditious solution to the damage caused to the Shandon Place/Ashley Terrace bridge and resolve the impact it is having on the travelling public and wider road network.

On 26 January the bridge was reopened to a single lane of traffic when a scaffold crash deck was erected under the bridge to protect vehicles and the public in the unlikely circumstance that loose stone fell from the arch barrel to the Network Rail access below. Unfortunately, Network Rail had not approved the clearance envelope provided for their vehicles and asked for the crash deck to be removed.

As a result, scaffolding was removed from the road and site, the bridge was closed and the crash deck is going to be replaced by a net attached to the barrel of the bridge. Glenevin Construction are still to appoint a contactor to supply and attach netting to the underside of the bridge, but aim to do so early next week.

Glenevin Construction are awaiting a report, from their Consultants, on the preliminary proposals for repair work. Council teams will meet with relevant parties once this report is received, expected by 1 February, and ensure that the plans are competent and the consultant has the necessary expertise to carry out the works.

Currently, the plan is for the bridge to remain closed until all repair works have been completed. However, Council teams will work with all parties working on the bridge and will aim to open the bridge, even if it is just for a single lane of traffic, as soon as it is safe to do so and the Council would not be liable for any further damage caused by traffic loading.

I have spoken to senior management at City Fibre and have discussed how this situation could be better communicated to residents and the wider public. Their thoughts are that it would not be wise to commence a communications campaign until they have a confirmed solution and timescales to report. I have advised them that some proactive dissemination of information with an acknowledgement of the disruption being caused would be useful, particularly over social media channels. I await their response on this. However, I will continue to update you on a weekly basis which I hope will help.

Unfortunately, Scottish Power had to carry out emergency works this week on Slateford Road/Harrison Road. Temporary signals were utilised and a southbound closure of Harrison Road was introduced. Roads Inspectors advised Scottish Power to amend their diversion signage so that matters at Shandon Place/Ashley Terrace were not complicated further. Work at this site has been backfilled and will be properly reinstated with all related traffic management removed over the weekend.

I hope this information is of use to you. Please get back to me if you have any further questions.

They're working in our area now. Can't help but notice the pavements are blocked with barriers, but no barriers on the road to provide "protection" (or at least provide a visual cue to motorists) to pedestrians who are thus forced to walk on the road - that can't be right?

Sadly the tailback at ardmillan meant there was no tailback further west where the road seemed to be clear though maybe temp traffic lights up nearer Margiotta.

Still, very quiet cycle home the last two nights though glad of the bollards as the drivers have driven themselves crazy by driving into a traffic jam,

Fun intensifies in this area.

Harrison Road is closed in the direction of Harrison Park this morning but open if Gorgie-bound. There are temp traffic lights at the Ardmillan/Slateford Road junction.

This is not mentioned in the Roadworks list and there was no sign of work ongoing at 0730 this morning but Edintravel reckon it is Scottish Power who did this.

I pedestrianated across Slateford Road past the Road Closed sign and salmoned my way up past Harrison Park to the church. What drivists there were were driving in uncompromising fashion as noted by @chrisfl but at least my direction of travel was clear - no impasse situations between motorists to negotiate

Suspect there will be much gammony rage from Watsons parents as this is one of their favoured routes to take when depositing their offspring at the school. Another of course being Ashley Terrace/Shandon Place...

Cityfibre seemed to be quite happy to park their van on the bridge earlier today so it can't be that b0rked.

The barriers at Margiotta seem to be much denser than the ones the other side, unless they've upgraded those after I went past at 1540.

FYI Cityfibre have taken their ‘work’ in the area to an entirely new level by borking the Ashley Terrace ex-rail bridge. ‘Bridge unsafe’ signs went up yesterday, carriageways closed to traffic both ways enforced by barriers (no obvious spaces for bikes), pavements are open. Suspect it may take some time to fix/reopen but it will be affecting Network Rail’s access to its yard which passes under the bridge so it may quickly become an expensive mistake for Cityfibre…
