“

Lots going on down at Coalie Park today with our monthly clean-up in full swing. As well as our usual land and water litter pick, we welcomed a new crew member onto the boat, removed a large buddliea tree, swept paths, and scrubbed graffiti from the planter benches. Thanks folks!

Is shut from today for several weeks for repairs at Colinton where i think tree roots or whatever the two navvies shoveled the rubber tar on to, has caused it to be broken up, Also @arobcomp has caused the original walls of the stable block to be revealed at the Big Hoose in Spylaw Park, for what is going to be a groovy community centre once. The RSGs are in place to secure the original walls which are more like pillars. Rollo Construction want the graffiti artists to hashtag them on their hoardings.

one of his lasting gifts to the city was founding and endowing the Water of Leith Walkway Trust in 1976. He passed away in 1982 at the age of 77, a year after the first section of what would become a fifteen mile walkway was opened to the public.

The new surface on the WoL path is getting quite badly deteriorated on the stretch I passed over from West Mill Road and past the back of Spylaw Park. Some patches had been repaired, but other sections were starting to fail. It looked to me as if the top surface had been laid wider than the supporting bed underneath, so the top surface was cracking and falling away at the sides.

Anyone know whether this is this known about and a proper solution being devised, rather than just continual patching?

The truth is that, over the past decades, our beloved wild garlic has been usurped by a cunning imposter, posing as the real deal.
Flood-hit Edinburgh pub to be razed for flats

A flood-hit late Victorian Edinburgh pub, closed since 2020, has been sold to deliver a 21 apartments.

The Longstone Inn has been closed since part of its structure fell into the Water of Leith, prompting the present plans by Fouin & Bell and QB Wood. This would see the current site cleared and flood walls repaired with new sheet piling, raising the site level above the present flood line.

In a statement, the applicant wrote: "The existing site is an eyesore and at risk of further damage from future flooding events and cannot be left in its current state.

"The new proposal would upgrade the river walls of both the Murrauburn and Water of Leith in accordance with 1 in 200-year flood risk and the council's Water of Leith flood prevention scheme."

Eddie Banks, a retired engineer living in the village, said: “The alternative is if you don’t take them down, then you could lose part of your graveyard. Which one do you want? Keep three trees, or lose part of your graveyard? I know what the locals would say.”

Mr Scott, who conceived the idea of decorating the old Colinton railway tunnel with a colourful mural, expressed concern visitors could miss out on the attraction as, while other points of access are available, smartphone maps and local signage “show that route as being open,” leading to confusion.

Ta

Was my idea to get WoLCT to do a Millennium Bid as a direct result of the Council (can’t remember if it was still EDC or early days of CEC) putting together a ‘grand’ proposal which was, more or less, a wish list of things it couldn’t afford to do.

Millennium Commission rules explicitly said their money (Lottery money) couldn’t be used by LAs to do things there were supposed to fund themselves - so I knew their attempt would fail.

Focusing on the WoL had more chance…

I wrote this https://archive.ph/frS7 (and did the design/layout - early days of DTP so I didn’t have the computer power to include photos - they had to be stuck on and the whole thing photocopied!) but not most of the rest of the document.

I had no idea about your involvement in that - the WoL walkway truly is one of the best urban walking routes I have ever used. So, thanks for that.

Truth inflation (but I’m not complaining).

The transformation of Edinburgh’s main river into a haven for wildlife is one of Scotland’s most successful conservation stories — but development threatens the hard work
