Lightning F-40! Basically a proto-velomobile from a time before they were invented. Since it has neither solid floor nor multi-track configuration, we call it a streamliner, and Tim Brummer designed it for faster, longer rides like RAAM and PBP.

Sure, it has pace of a velomobile and the lower rolling resistance of a bike, but it's tricky bordering on dangerous in cross-winds and is frankly completely impractical in any environment with traffic lights and stop lines.

One spotted by @jss on his return trip. Not sure how easy that would be on Leith Walk cycle lanes! :-)

@boghall - good pictorial overview. @jss in at least one shot!
Lot of creative engineering energy across cargo, tandem and recumbent models.
(Reminded me that the Raderwerk Milan velomobile was our first 'really niche' build with Bicycle Works. @arellcat helped with German instructions as it really was just about of bits with bodywork in two parts!)

Had on the road back report from @jss

Seems the bit of the Rhine radweg with atrocious surface had virtually destroyed the back tyre of his recliner.
Had a spare GP 4000 though.

He connected to a few people I knew only from doing business. Shows how small a world the European scene is. Glad we opted to stay in EU (mentally).

- M5 owner Bjorn - he cycled from Hamburg to Edinburgh for EdFoC
- Honda from Czech brand Azub. Their reclined tandem was reviewed by @dave.
- Radical bags and trailers. We helped them out to distribute bags after Brexit prevented them selling direct to customers in GB. (They still could of course in N. Ireland.)
- ICE and Urban Arrow didn't attend - event maybe too small for them now.
- Veloe from Italy were there with Multi (we have demo).
- Bernds still doing tandems. Inspiration for Circe Helios. Design has changed from when we had one for school run / family transport.
- Black Iron Horse cargo trike - new Danish brand - only one in Edinburgh so far. Rear wheel steer.
- Velomobiel and Velowerk plus 12 other vm makes we never dealt with. Yes 14 velomobile brands at Spezi!

Website has neat links to what was on display and a few videos somewhere.

Latest @jss report... my emphasis(!)

Afraid I spotted one too many cargo bikes cycling through Basel to Spezi.
All driven at breakneck speed either by young bearded steam punkertypes or young frauleins with their kinder broods.
Thinking these HGVs of the cycling world should be banned from cycle paths after experiencing several near misses from these hurtling large electrically assisted monster wheel barrows.
At least not threatened by any velo torpedoes!
BTW avoid Rhine radweg unless you have a fat bike!
In their teutonic wisdom the Germans have thought it a great idea to cover it in thick pea gravel making it near impossible to cycle on a normal bike.
Mainly the section from Breissach to Nueunberg.
Better sticking to the silky smooth tarmac on the French side. Better wine too.

From spotted....

On a dreich day here in Dole in the Jura enroute to Spezi 2023 in Germany spotted a heavily laden Pederson piloted by mid-late age chap
On eurovelo 6 here which ends up in Budapest so quite a few bike packers pass through here . Bit early in the season just now

@jss - one day I need to visit that show. Keep us updated as it is a bit unique in the bike world. Think Azub are quite involved.
Smooth travelling!

@nobrakes That's true. Rode a Catbike once at Velovision magazine HQ around 2010. Quite nice.

I see Velomobile world are looking for VM Ambassadors.
Brilliant for a 'drive' to a known landing place with excellent energy use, comfort and interior carrying capacity. No need for electrics but the 'shark mobile' Quest in city does have a motor. @arellcat's only has battery for lights. Human power delivers easily when drag is so low.

https://www.velomobileworld.com/i-want-to-be-an-ambassador/

Looks a bit like a Catbike Musashi, but a little less extreme. I wonder how much it weighs. As a Fuego owner weight has never been a huge consideration though :)

No ! On venerable Lightning P38 but as years advance an old man’s thoughts do turn toward electric assist more and more like looking forward to the comfort of a warm electric blanket at night which was something I never even thought about until I hit my mid 70’s
Think the show might well be obsessed with cargo bikes though
I do not thing many 2 wheel recumbents although the new owners are Wolf und Wolf who make a great recumbent two wheeler with a great Swiss price tag
Rear end is P38 and front end Fuego like
Glad you are back safe and sound from SA

Should be my thing. Just back from SA though. Spezi maybe the last cycling event not to be obsessed by e-bikes? That alone makes it a worthwhile trip.
(Or are you using one of your assisted bikes? :-)
