"suggest that this signals the end of the move towards self government. Recent polls suggest otherwise."

This is true, indy polls still in the +40%.

Polls also suggest Labour will overturn SNP in next election.

Not sure that will happen myself, but people can clearly see that on almost every measure the SNP govt has failed on it's stated priorities, and the corruption in the party doesn't help either.
They are going to get a bloody nose and Yousaf will likely be out, tbf no-one will notice that as he is practically invisible as a leader.

If people no longer trust SNP, I'm not quite sure of the route to self rule...

With election coming up maybe easier?

FM has few friends in media of course.

My vote can't go to parties that support climate destruction and the supply of weapons used on innocent civilians. Labour and Conservative parties only offer more of the same imho. LibDem no idea.

99% of the millionaire owned press are desperate to suggest that this signals the end of the move towards self government. Recent polls suggest otherwise.

Controversial shake-up plans shelved in of favour new proposals but Leith left out of seat name

Controversial plans to redraw Edinburgh’s political map by linking Portobello with Midlothian and Cramond with Broxburn have been abandoned and a new set of proposals unveiled in their place.

But the new changes could also prove controversial because Leith does not feature in any of the constituency names. The public has a month to give their views on the latest plans, with the new boundaries set to come into effect for the next Scottish Parliament elections in 2026.

PLUS!!!

“

An estimated 3 million Britons living abroad for more than 15 years will regain their right to vote in all elections in the UK from Tuesday, ending 20 years of broken promises by successive UK governments.

The end of the so-called 15-year rule means millions more could be enfranchised in time for the next general election, the date of which has yet to be decided by the prime minister, Rishi Sunak.

“People there want their country back etc.”

Some do, and also like ‘tradition’

100 years ago (literally) -

“

Ramsay MacDonald: Labour’s First Prime Minister

It's a hundred years since Ramsay MacDonald assumed office as Labour’s first Prime Minister. The illegitimate son of a farm labourer and servant girl, he was the lowest born of any PM, and brought with him a Cabinet including miners, railwaymen and steel workers the like of which had never been seen in British government.

“

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001vcgv

“Too many Scottish voices could be very irritating.“

Perhaps.

Some might like the idea of a range of ‘voices’ beyond public school/Oxbridge/(former) student politicians/Party careerists/people from Islington/etc.

Not really on offer though!

Of course rather a lot can/will happen before the election - even if it’s ‘forced’ to happen in the first part of the year. (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/15/sunak-faces-tory-meltdown-as-deputy-chairs-back-rwanda-bill-rebellion)

Believe it or not…

“

Isaac Levido tells backbench Tory MPs to end infighting and focus on ‘narrow path’ to general election victory

“

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/15/get-serious-sunaks-campaign-director-tells-tories-they-can-win

It seems likely that in England there will be significant amounts of ‘tactical voting’ designed to remove as many Tories as possible.

Some of that will happen in Scotland, but the unpopularity of the SNP (relative to the fairly recent past and its performance in Gov, more than any opposition to ‘Indy’) makes predictions more difficult.

Arguably the behaviour of Lab could have more effect on the result than seems possible given the unpopularity of Sunak and co. Ian Murray’s word won’t be much help in England (not that many people will notice). In Scotland, hard to see it as beneficial for Lab trying to win people back from being ‘SNP voters’. Tactical voting of staying at home may be even stronger north of the border.

Plus -

“

General election: Labour would need record swing to win

“

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67361138

This is interesting on votes from Scotland and how often they have affected UK results.
https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2024/01/15/without-scotland/

So in a 65 year period Scotland started off with 74 seats, then 59, and now 57 (giving us even less influence) Scottish voters have:
• stopped the Tories winning outright once in 1964,
• possibly changed the outcome in 1974
• denied the Tories an overall majority in 2010, only for Labour to make a mess of negotiations.
(Tidied up a bit from BC but still messy)

Ian Murray's statement is not going to go down well in England? People there want their country back etc. Too many Scottish voices could be very irritating. Also tricky in areas that are devolved.

Scottish votes might be important in next UK election?

I often feel that opinion and policies here are seen as more of an irritant than threat to a collective UK view.
The fact Scotland doesn't have NHS strikes is portrayed as having weak government in the mainly right wing press and state media. Free bus passes and prescriptions are largesse from UK tax payer etc.
'Normality' is the ability to hold stocks of nukes and drill for oil and support USA and their policies.

'Only' four times since 1945 was UK Labour majority ensured by votes in Scotland. In some ways that will say votes for Labour are important to help England get rid of current government as they have no devolution there.
Anyway rambing on as reading on train...

Don't understand. If Labour has such a resource of talent why is SA having to try and join the ranks of its one Scottish MP?
Took 3 minutes before he made the announcement!
Also don't understand his hesitancy about saying Tory party is incompetent (yes - other parties are not immune).
Who's going to do all the transport stuff if he goes? Was only interim tho ;-)

@LaidBack The party bigwigs' response to the situation in Gaza has been despicable from word one. I don't know if they're just principled and committed Zionists who genuinely believe a genocide 80 years ago means another now is A-OK, or if they're just being as cynical and cold-blooded as they are with most of the rest of their policy agenda and simply want to avoid tabloid & Tory accusations of hypocrisy having previously used "antisemitism" as a big tool in his party purge, but either way they've managed to shift me from a "if I have to to keep the tories out" mentality to "eff it I'll just stay home" when it comes to my vote.

Not missed a single election of any sort since I reached the age of majority. I just hope the SNP still look like they're in with a decent shot in my seat.

“

None of this is certain, unless we make it so. But far from stepping up to confront the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced, our governments accelerate towards the horizon. For instance, Rishi Sunak, hitherto a mere trip hazard in the UK’s political history, now seems to have discovered his purpose: trashing the planet on behalf of corporate power. Government sources say he will use next week’s king’s speech to redouble his attack on green policies. On Monday, his government announced 27 new North Sea oil and gas licences. On the same day, a study in Nature Climate Change revealed that the remaining carbon budget – the net amount of carbon dioxide humans can still emit to retain a 50% chance of staying within 1.5°C of global heating – will be exhausted in just six years of business as usual. Only an emergency decision to leave fossil fuels in the ground is likely to prevent this temperature threshold being breached.

Reasons not to be cheerfull 1 & 2.

1.Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy claims that bombing a refugee camp in Gaza is legally justified. I think that's an outrageous statement.
Still no cease fire either.

I remember marching against the Iraq war in 2003 - feels like that again.

2. Covid enquiry shows that Westminster was unable to make decisions rationally for UK/England. Radio this morning still trying to find a way to imply things were just as bad here - BBC can't help themselves.

So since opposing ULEZ they have almost lost the ex prime minister's sear and actually lost 1 of their historically safest seats along with another by election and they still think it's a smart move.

The only other explanation that I can see is that they are planning to be personally enriched by their policy swing after they leave government.

Ye Olde England Motoring Party.
Anti Green doesn't make them anti environment of course!;-)

I think Scotland really needs to sort things for itself asap. We have the assets of both energy and people. Going to be tough but why let someone else that few here voted for destroy your environment with your resources?
As for the expected next government of Keir Starmer...
Judging by the fudge or 'non call' for a Gaza ceasefire Labour are in danger of losing support. Glad to see Anas Sarwar has now called for one now Sadiq Khan has given him cover! Energy wise it will be business as usual with Labour but with Great British Energy HQ in Glasgow (probably not registered in Scotland though to make it easy to shift south!)
